Title: Anyone give up yet till new year?
Post by: Klean07 on December 16, 2010, 04:27:11 pm
I've still got over £1,000 worth to do between now and chrimbo. I don't like losing money but the way this freeze is setting in again I may have to kiss it goodbye!!! We'll see!!

I've given up.And i'm near three weeks behind anyway. Bit of a disaster.

Tonight took 4040 etc in, took pumps in and drained heater.

It'll be jan when i face the punters again.I'm hoping not too many drop me, but if some do, they do.

No - having Sunday off and other that will try and do a bit every day. If the weather had just held another 3 days we'd have got to everyone. Am hoping they got it wrong and it will warm up just a bit for next week  ::)

I have looked into the carpet side of things a few years ago but found that people dont like having carpets done when its snow outside or really wet. Even if I did my own I wouldnt want to have them done in bad weather.
I did ask a lot of carpet cleaners and they all told me the same thing.

bullseye mate you seem to be giving up far too easy mate
your in west mids just like me and it hasnt been that bad here mate.

you have to just get on with it, i worked 11- 3pm today got plenty
in just keep your hoses off the ground as poss when working and keep
the flow going try not switch off until you have finished job even if you
turn it down to a bare trickle water less likely to freeze up, i know its
a waste of some water but it will keep you going.
take plenty of rock salt out with you gives custies reassurance that
there will be no probs.

taking tank in all the time must be a ball ache, just get down the
local car wash and get some barrels fill up and take in overnight

You must be physcic mate. I've been out today 11 to 330pm and had a great day. Was going great then did a house high up and brush froze so instead of giving up I used my other brush to finish off by which time the frozen one was ok by the time I got to my next job. I also kept flow going like you say.  ;D

Hiya mate, Went out yesterday and got a full day in but woke up today and very heavy snow. Its only just stopped here. According to radio Merry Hell has been the quietest its ever been (thank god). -7 here tonight. Must be bad to have most of premier footie games called off!! As most have undersoil heating.
Well I'm still optimistic in getting all my work done before xmas. I've only got another 3 days max anyway. Good luck to you anyway mate.

Same here. The temps we get here during the day are what the southern softies get during the night.

Go out wfp'ing at 3am & see how you fare! ::)

See the news today 'cos they got a few inch down south ;D ::) We had over 1 metre two weeks ago!!! ::) ::)

Been -3 all day today, im trad. Water froze til 12ish so used cloths. Managed to mop and blade for a couple of hours then started to freeze again. So called it a day. Im in sheffield and at moment we have not had this batch of snow. We got 2 foot two weeks ago which meant i had ten days off. Got fed up at home bored and not earning so went out in snow drifts just doing downstairs for a few days. Charged my custies half price and they were happy! Not going to get above freezing til after christmas so got to get round this either changing starting time or using screenwash or just cloths. tips are going well as well, custies are taking pity on me coming out in such extreme conditions so are tipping well and getting 4 or 5 hot drinks a day!

We really needed about 2/3 more days but it's not looking good but not prepared just to give it up - even if it picks up mid week then will give it our best shot.

We've got under 10% customers which are over 6 weeks but we've got a whole bunch which like an extra 'early' clean before Christmas. It'll be a case of most profitable/closest and apology phone calls to anyone we've promised but can't get to. Side roads are going to be out round here for certain until all the snow we've had today starts to melt (got approx 5/6 inches)

Problem is, first nice day they all think they are priority. My aunt's been on the phone and asked when we were coming to do hers.

6 inches you are joking you are not that far from me and we have had more like 14 inches so no work for Monday and yes you were right they did close merry hill down around lunch time today due to weather me and a mate off mine went down to great bridge today and it took us 2 1/2 hours to get back and it was only 6 miles the worse i have seen since i was 17.

Give up?  No chance.  I'll write off days individually if I have to and even part days.  There's no way I'm writing off whole weeks if there might be windows of opportunity in them.  I will be keeping options open until last light on Xmas Eve and also the 29th - 31st.  Indeed there is one job I may even do on the 28th if travel is possible.

Looks like this week is going to be another write off. Theres no sign of snowing thawing this week. Highest temp is forecast to be 0. Though if there wasnt 8 inches of snow lying around I would be out there working. Couldnt even open my van doors today froze solid.
I may just get my 3 days in on 28th, 29th and 30th now. Thats if we have a thaw.

Good reply Daz, as said by others i'l weigh up next week as it comes.
Not today's at moment would be least of my worries at least 2 weeks behind.

I'm a bit better off financially this winter than last winter.
As chopsie said you got to cancel out your current debt before you can build up a safety fund.

Can't help but feel like a one legged man in an arse kicking contest at mo :'(

We are going to go out and just do trad bottoms and offer to do insides for those that are over due plus those customers who asked for them to be done close to Christmas. Showing your face is the main thing and hopefully they feel sorry for us and give us a tip.

All closely packed in work so if they say 'not today' it'll be a bonus and onto the next one.

Looks like it might be warmer between Christmas and New Year so might do a couple of days then if we don't get to everyone.

Other half is relieved that I've been buying Sainsbury's basics stuff all year so that we've got a decent stash anyway ;D
