i got the non-turbo 2.5d hi top mwb. on a 51. great van for getting stuff in and takes 1200kgs payload.
thats it though cos once the tanks full it wont go anywhere. very slow. ok if you live on the flat. but any hill whatsoever and its nightmare. if you can find a 2.0 hdi model. you wont regret it.
dread to think what the 1.9 is like.
dont get me wrong i like the van, but i only work within 5mile from home.

nightmare van
Please explain in a little more detail why its a nightmare van. If that's your experience, please tell us your reasons for saying that as it helps people to make informed decisions.
IMO its 'horses for courses'. If you are going to do a lot of miles then the 1.9 is sluggish from my own personal experience. It maybe the same engine as the Berlingo but it has different gear ratios. Because of this and the extra weight and wind resistance it will use more fuel than the Berlingo.
Having had the 1.9 and now the Hdi, I find there is not a lot of difference in fuel consumption between them. While the performance is much better with the hdi, using the turbo knocks fuel consumption. On the open road. I could only get about 60mph out of it with 600 litres of water, but then apart from motorways, that's your maximum speed limit anyway.
For WFP the problem with this van (Boxer 270) is it's carrying capacity - around the 800 - 900kg mark before you add anything in, so you will be restricted by the size of tank you can fit in it.
If that is not an issue then make sure you have a decent service history and that the gearbox doesn't grate in any gears. Even better to have the gearbox oil checked. Mine had 100k on the clock when I bought it from a rental company, body work a bit bashed around, but mechanically 100% sound.
As has been suggested, try to find a newer Hdi Citroen Relay 11, Peugeot Boxer 290, or Fiat Ducato 2.0 Jtd. They all have a similar payload of 1100kgs. They are exactly the same van, made by Fiat with Peugeot/Citroen mechanicals and engine. The later 2002 - 2006 models have remote central locking as well as heated/electric mirrors. Again, check service history and ensure gearbox is sound. The newer Hdi had a different gearbox which was better designed than the original.

i have no problem with my berlingo, ok one the engine needs another 25 bhp id say, overtaking isnt a choice its just follow wots infront of you lol. ;D

Hi Ant
The 1.9 Peugeot engine is or was the best out there by far at one time. When the Berlingo first came out it was a 1.8 not a 1.9. At the time drivers who had diesel Escort vans, the most popular at the time, were convinced it was turbo charged as it was so quick when compared to theirs. How times have changed.

lol when my van is empty its great and i love putting the foot down on bends its good fun lol but with a full van its a nightmare. best bit tho is mpg, im getting mpg i could of dreamt about, think if i get a new van it will be another or a pug.

Yep! overtaking had to be planned long in advance. Sadly, the 1.9 no longer meets euro4 emission standards, so the 1.6hdi 75hp has taken over from that engine.
Unfortunately, I had left the motor trade by the time that had happened so would be interested in knowing what the difference is between them performance wise. Although the horsepower rates are very similar, its the torque of the diesel and the gear ratios that are the most important.
The Citroen Picasso was the first vehicle to get the new 1.6 hdi. It didn't perform as well as the 2.0 90hp IMO, but then they gave the 110hp rating by using turbo boost in 3rd gear only - and that's cheating.
The best towing car was the C5 110hp hdi diesel, towed better than the C5 2.2 with 135hp. Always found that interesting.

i cant complain tho i paid 495 for my van, s reg 130k on clock i got a bargain. lots of dents which some i pushed out, downside is the rear doors wont lock or unlock and i have to get in the front and open from inside, im working on fixing that tho this weekend if weather aint like it is at the min. and if me and my daughter are better. 8)

You will probably find that the problem with the rear door lock is a little plastic bracket that breaks. I think every Citroen/Peugeot parts department will have them in stock, and they didn't cost much either. It's a popular part.
I have never fitted one but it isn't very difficult I was told by the garage macs. The paperwork took longer than the job, so they hated doing them.
They said it was a weakness, but I think it is a safety design, although the plastic did become more brittle with age and hence it's increased failure rate.
That is, if that's the problem.

My little P Partner 1.6 hdi 75 goes well if you make the turbo growl but the best bit is a genuine 60mpg on the motorway if you have a gentle right foot.
The build quality is not that robust but a new van for £35 a week who's arguing?

i do about 200 miles a week all up and get through about 15-25 quid, cant complain my old car b4 this van did 29mpg i was skint
