Hi all,
This is to mainly those who employ
Ive got two vans on the road, 1 operator in each but im looking to take on another person in the new year.
would it be more profitable to get another vehicle, or let two guys work out of one vehicle ?
Thanks for your help

I also have 2 vans 1 man for each van the Iverco dailey is set up for 3 men my small van is for 1 man I set up looking to set up next year a second man but found this year not making much net profit gross work 1 man he does is £2450 month I pay him £1280 month plus he gets 28 days hols plus bank hols fuel poles ins ect gas lost days to weather my net is now down to £500 per month I am hoping that with a second man this should increase to 40% to around £900
slow process take around a year to get second man working full time.

2450 sounds very low, averages out at about 15 an hour for 8 hrs a day x 20 days
is it trad?
-
it depends on the work load, if lots of bits and bobs then better to get another van, but if big contracts then 2 in a van
-
wfp all residential he starts at 9 till around 4.30
-
2 men on 1 van should be £4k a month at least
-
what net do you think can be made from £4000 from 2 men with 1 van
-
i reckon you want at least 6k from 2 guys
4k from one, i wouldnt consider doing it for any less, not that it cant be done, but the returns wouldnt be worth it, wages, fuel, insurances, tax, vat etc
2500 a month from one guy is definitely low, the guy is working very slow or is on underpriced work.
If you are happy then fine but i think you realise you need more return as you posted so you need to find out whether a, your work is underpriced or b, your guy is too slow!!
-
2500 is seriuosly low monthly turnover for one guy.
one man can sometimes do more but sometimes two men can depends on the work.
-
My question was should i get another van or two guys share a van
They will be cleaning 100% residential
-
Does the new guy have experience?
Why don't you let the new guy go with the better of the 2 for a 2 months. See what figures they're earning. If you're happy leave it, if not offer the new guy his own van if he thinks he can work hard, and offer him the chance to earn more but tell him this is a big responsibility etc..

There are some laughable people on this forum.
Nearly £2500 for one man low? In some areas of the country maybe but for most its a reasonable figure.
I would say 20 -25% of the turnover for the van is reasonable net profit and you have nothing to lose by trying 2 men in one van then if it doesnt pay dividends just send the second man out in another van.
I work out of one van with 2 of us and it averages about 60% extra work done with a second man.

"There are some laughable people on this forum"
2500 is low for 20 days work = 125.00 - wages - tax - overheads etc , nearly no point bothering to employ at that , for a one man band you could live but not an employee
the guy wants more turnover and if you dont realize that a window cleaner especially wfp can do much more than that youre doing something wrong, im surprised that after running costs wages and tax and vat you would make anything on 2500 legally with an employee !
But if thats how you wanna run your business then fine, he asked for opinions he got them :)

Theres nothing like a thread that hits you in the back of the head with a brick is there ?
I was just about to come on and say "Bunch of jokers"
But then i looked at the figures and it added up !
I just went through 5 months of hell with a second van with one man , 4 people in total , 1 of them i had twice , dont tell my missus though ;D
I was out there pullin in 200+ a day , he was coming back with 120 tops , couldnt think why , im a bit of a twot really , and why was this , cos i was palming him off with all the poop underpriced work that i did not want to do
Feel a right plum now , he aint gonna make the wonga with pants work is he ?
My choices now are clear , or are they , do i hike the prices dramatically to cover the second van and man or do i stick to one man band ?
If i bang up the charges i could lose work and not have it for the second van , if i dont i will stay a busy fool with far too much to do , what you guys reckon ?

Rich i reckon the same brick has been used on the back of my head. It's pity you can't put figures on here but as you say on a good day i'm over that, but with a helper when he can see the figures he thinks 300 and i should be praising instead of bitching. The figures don't work.
