Post by: M.Acorn on December 13, 2010, 05:57:00 pm
As far as my tax return goes,i have had polo shirts logo`d and have some fleece`s too,am thinking about getting some combat trousers logo`d so i can get the money back ,what about footwear ? I s it possible to claim for that ? Say if special chemical resistant boots were purchased.
Going to try and worm out some more  ;D

Mark as long as they have metal toe caps you will be fine.
You are lifting 40kg of machine on & off the van ;)

I claim every single penny on everything that is used for the business, hand  it all over to the accountant to sort out. He tells me what is and not allowed, thats what i pay him for :)

Its perfectly reasnable to go through 2 or 3 pairs of work shoes a year (No, not a pair of Diesal designer trainers! lol). Also remember that your clothes useage and everything else needs to be inline with the amount of work you do!! wink wink!  ;)

I buy my workshirts from M&S I keep the receipt and its just has a stock number and the price. I claim this but how does anyone know these receipts are not my wifes Xmas present from their lingerie  dept?

I buy a lot of stuff and just get a till receipt which does not name the item only the price.

how does the taxman know if a shoe receipt is  for my trendy Timberland shoes or work shoes.

Exactly!

Just keep your out goings reasonable to what you claim that you earn.

Mike the tax man only has to look at you to know that you're not a Timberlands shopper more like Beachcomber :o

And for those who don't know it's a TV show from the 1970's

I keep every single receipt, and write on the back what it was for,my outgoings on my business were 13 grand last year !!

Could i buy some cases of wine, and hand them out to the staff at the letting agents, and claim that back as expenses ? Or nice single malt  ;D

Mark it makes no difference what your outgoings are as long as the income covers it and its related
or you will go pop, bust ,bang not sure in what order ;D

NO, but you could take them out for a meal and put it down as entertaining clients (which they are).
As for other comments, if it is a neccessity to running your business then it is claimable, I get through trainers at a phenonimal rate but they are neccessary to do the job inside a clients property whilst looking respectable. Every summer I buy a new pair of sunglasses on the business because there are times I have to work outside in the sun.
The list is endless as long as IT IS USED WITHING THE BUSINESS, but obviously within reason (no £150 pair of designer gear).

Sounds like more than i first thought then,my accountant said i would need footwear anyway,so couldn`t claim that.
Sunglasses is a good one,as always busting mine

Slightly off topic, but something I looked into Tax wise when I got my latest van.
I had been claiming Mileage allowance on my previous one. That way I didn't have to tally up and book in all the fuel receipts. The down side is off course that you cannot claim any other motor expenses, like road fund license, Insurance, and repairs etc.
In the end I have decided to claim all the separate motoring expenditure on my new van and not go the mileage allowance way. The reason for this decision and one which I dont think many are aware of, is, if you claim mileage allowance, you cannot claim Capital Allowance on the van.
If you want to claim Capital Allowance you have to claim normal motoring expenses and not mileage allowance.
Dave.
