Title: 1600 Customers
Post by: Lee Gilroy on December 10, 2010, 06:30:42 pm
Is this a realistic amount of customers to aim for on a 6 week clean between 2 men.

This gives us 133 each to do in a week with a labourer each to foot the ladder. Obviously WFP will be prefered in the end. That works out at about 3 per hour on an average 3 bed house.

This is what we want to aim for.

Are there many out there operating with a large customer base and taking it to the next level.

I know many might say it seems a load fo b******s but you have got to aim for something and we are grafters.

I am putting together a business plan and at the moment while its freezing cold looking at the way forward. We will deliver 100,000 thousand leaflets if we have to and knock on every door.

Any advice please other than wake up and get real.

Cheers for the replies it took about 10mins for the Pc to stop freezing.

I based it on an average of £10 per house. It will vary I know I have one customer who is £45 and its all patios doors all round. Takes about hour and half.

I want in new year to pack in the job I am doing as i am self employed and sick of construction and customers going bust or not paying.

If a customer does not pay in Window Cleaning its £10 but in Construction it can be £5k.

At moment I have about 30 customers and it took about a week to get them with about 3,000 leaflets. So looking to do WFP as spent past year doing all the planning so ready to make the switch and put down the trowel and pick up the pole.

Just concentrate on getting decent prices, easy access, good loyal customers. Forget picking up work cheap just to get the numbers as 6 months later you'll despise cleaning them.

I throw my trowel away about 3 years ago for the same reasons,if you only have 30 customers might be best to build up on your own being having to share out the work with others,My customers chose me because I am on my on and just get on with job, 4 blokes turning to clean a house can be a bit intimidating and you could end up with a large wage bill before you have collected the money.Try getting 100 customers a week before taking staff on but I would recommend going WFP as no chance of falling off ladders and what you going to pay someone to foot a ladder £40 a day? boring and low paid you could get a ladder stop for that and they dont anser back ;D

I'm not knocking you but consider two things.

You'll be lucky to obtain finance for what you want, especially if your previous company had issues.

You can not deliver what you advertise & it could take some time to do so.

I understand that you can't have a website which informs of your real situation but you say there is no rush? Punting for government schools etc. what are you going to do when REAL situations arise?

Imagine you get some "issues" whilst working at a school etc - if they refer to your website claims & professional memberships, i think you could find yourself in trouble.

Building up a good customer base is hard work, more so this time of year & when starting up, you are often spending more than you are earning.

Got to say theres nothing wrong with abit of ambition and all that but 1600 custies is a long long way down the line, you should be thinking more 2-300 to start, the more you canvass the more you will realise that not every area produces a custy, ive been building a round for the last 8month or so and think ive done pretty well at 140 new customers in that amount of time and im sure people will agree thats a healthy growth rate when building a round so realistically how long will 1600 take??

If you havent joined the guilds/associations or invested in the products your advertising its a insult to the people that have!!!!

I am looking to get finance for the equipment instead of using my van and ladder.

They said it was ok to use the logo's as they own them all and it also is advertising for them.

So legal dept Lol  ::) Yer Right.

I think a 400 customers a month would be a more realistic projection for a bank finance average £10 a house but I think you would struggle to clean 20 houses a day every day.I think you would have to buy a few rounds and £4000 pounds worth a month would cost about £12000 minimum and public sector work they want references of other contracts

Hi Lee, doing well with the lads on the forum  ::)

I don't see anything wrong with the name - makes you stand out and very professional looking.
however, you posted on here for advice then instantly got defensive because people have seen some
inconsistances.

if you have run a company for years - surely you have some idea how to do a b/s plan and as you have 30
custy's then you already know your average time and earning potential.

i did a b/s plan and course through the local enterprise scheme - they may be of help to you.

but it's no good winding up the very people who can help you make the right decisions in this business.

Why change your name from CDL to Piranha unless I wonder. If you only have 30 customers after 2 years plus you need to pack the window cleaning in and you already know if 1600 customers is possible, and if you been in business for years and employed and sacked guys and run Building contracts is Dominic littlewood after you and there isnt a cowboy window cleaners programme on channel five yet

Typical Northerner.....Thank God Coronation Street has burnt down. You will all become window cleaners now.

Changed the name to make it stand out move into 21st Century. Bit like Dave & Bob Window Cleaning

Ok. Maybe Lee's got off on the wrong footing. It's quite easy for us to sit back & see all the flaws etc.

So, why don't we & lee start afresh, now we've aired our views? :-*

Maybe with a fresh thread? lock this one?

I am enjoying this...  :)

how long does it take for you to clean you 30 customers?

They are all spread out as people have rung in. Fit them in around the building work but now sick of people not paying in construction and ready for a change.

Enjoy the window cleaning, hassle free but need to make sure i have enough customers before making the swap.

Been offered bigger stuff but didnt make the investment in WFP but I am ready now, but would like to offer both.

Lee........
Dont!!!!!!!!!! Pay for an'new' expensive wfp system.
Keep your eye on ebay lots of second hand bargains on there mate.
Leaflet then leaflet some more, I have built up a nice round in less than a year.
WFP is the way to go.
you could clean up to 40 foot for as little as £300 if you are clued in!!
If your website attracts some high work (wfp) sub it out to a local firm until you have your gear.
Happy days

I was looking for a transit van.......is it cheaper to fit myself or get it already fitted ?

I have a small workshop and could have one of the tanks making the water pure then take it out and about is that the best way forward ?

Ebay never thought of that thanks I will look.

lee personally you cant even crawl so why you trying to run?

take one step at a time, if you have 30 customers you have a long way to go and a lot to learn.

not looked at your site so dont know what juicy logos youve got but make sure there legit otherwise you will only hrm your rep, has for ionics the norm is to buy a system first then be allowed to use there logo.

Now 1600 customers over 6 weeks working 5 days every week doing 40 hours is 3.3 now that is not taking into consideration how you move from job to job getting to the job weather?? other problems??

be realistic and move forward from there.

many have come in with big ideas buying up rounds throwing money at leaflets and have failed, better to not get above your station at the moment.

No Idea what your talking about .....Give advice but dont preach.

Two vans for two blokes is the long term plan. No idea about running and all that waffle.

I can only do the jobs I have so I have to build up the round. The idea is between us we can cover different areas instead of running around and thats it really.

Ionics said no problem with Logo as they think I will buy some equipment.

Its not a realistic amount to aim for. And frankly for your modus oparandi its laughable.

So looking to do WFP as spent past year doing all the planning so ready to make the switch and put down the trowel and pick up the pole.

So, been planning for a year and ended up still not knowing how many customers to aim for.  Still planning on trad with a paid labourer to foot ladders.  No idea about WPF, names one manufacturer on his website, has another manufacturer's logo.  Comes on totally belligerent and argumentative with enough ego to sink a ship. Thinks that being called a Northerner is some kind of insult.

Clearly a total and utter wind up.

If this guy's still posting on the forum under this name in a fortnight, I'll be astounded.  Someone on the pop a bit early, I think.

Lee.
I see you are based in Horsham.
If you saying an average of £10 a house in an area like that, you are underselling yourself by a very big margin.

Well Lee, or whoever you are, I thought you might be for real after the first post but then I read the rest of the thread  ;D .  It seems you're to familiar with the brand of insults on here to be new  ;D .
Just in case any of your postings were real, I've been window cleaning nearly twenty years and I've only got 240 customers of my own and 18 that are fairly regular sub contract jobs.  I used to have about 500 customers years ago but that was the pointr when I discovered that quality is better than quantity - especially for a sole trader.
Honestly, the work I've passed on or dropped over the years could probably have been two rounds worth.  The trouble was that I used to need a lot of customers just to get a full round each time because there were a lot of the "not today" brigade in there.
I do want to build further in the new year and guess which area I have my sights on.  Yep.  You've guessed it.  Horsham & District  ;D .  I'm not joking either.  I want 50 - 100 decent quality customers to improve the quality of my business.  At the moment I do get a reasonable few days off to recuperate from the graft but I would like to start earning more.
BTW.  The sheep you mentioned are better if you take them to the edge of a cliff.  They push back harder.

i have 600 customers, enough for a average of 4 days work a week with 1 van and 2 men at one time.

leaving me space for about 150 customers, but i leave the space for odd jobs.

the post says 1600 customers sure it said £10 average.  thats £16k per 4 week

12-13cleans a year so he be turning over at least £192,000
