Years ago they cleared all the estates with snow ploughs and gritters,... all the "B" roads were also cleared very quickly,
We pay more council tax and road tax than ever before , yet the councils concentrate on only the "A" roads, .....and then when the snow has nearly gone, only then do they start on the estates,
Im having a little rant moment , because its not fair that they should only assume people have to get to work ...via a main road and back again,
Some people have to travel around the whole town to work,or on a lot of estates.
Us... couriers etc.
Its all about saving money again.
Rant over !
-
Think of all those extra wheely bins we have now though.
-
I drove my wife into work today. We live near to Alton Towers but my wife works at Etruria - Stoke on Trent (13 miles away)
We have been dumped on by the snow, it is nowhere near as bad in Stoke on Trent.
The only minor road I saw that had obviously been cleared & gritted - anyone guess??
On an estate where the majority are council houses!!!!!!
Rob ;D
-
Yep i agree,
speaking to a bin man yesterday , and i asked how come my bin was left ,he said because the lid was slightly open (3")..... so they would have left it,
he then said , but they take everything away on council estates.... and they reason why!!!!???
because no one else would take it , and the tenants would not take it to the tip...so the estate would be over run with garbage.
so private estates pay huge amounts of council tax and get the worst services.
-
Completely and utterly snowed in here. Really bad, you pay so much council tax and people can't even get out of the close, to go to work. It's about 20-30 cm here. They fail to realise that it's badly hurting the economy, so by them trying to save money they are actually losing on it in the end. :-[
-
Saw on tv this morning , the savings they tried to make has totally backfired,
as you said its costing the economy.... 2 billion per day, thats 10,000 snow ploughs.
-
Anyway,
I have just sent in a complaint to the council...asking that estates also be put on the list of priorities also... and that its all well and good getting the main roads cleared for people to travel to and from the workplace..etc etc..
but to spare a thought for people who work in and around the community ,who also pay council tax, and have also to work , and feed their families, but cant , because the estates are blocked.
Do you think they will take any notice?
me neither.
and there are hundreds and hundreds of us.
-
Reason why theres not as much money to look after our lovely country????
Cos there are too many in it now, and the public and councils purse only holds the same amount of money as it did previously.........hence.....
Those numb nuts in immigration didnt think of this before opening their welcoming arms to everyone!!! >:( >:( >:(

Hers is a crazy idea, why don't u and your neighbours get your shovels out and clear your street, that's what they did when I was a kid. But trouble is nobody even speaks to their neighbours now, let alone help each other out.
-
its all so very true but no point bleating about it . then again,if it staves off your cabin fever then BLEAT away but not in my ear
-
Its not my street im worried about, its all the others with a slight incline where my van gets stuck.
-
I so want to go off on a rant on this one but I wont!!!
Anyone that watched the programme Trillion pound debt(or something like that) would know that we now have 70% public sector being funded by 30% private sector.
Unsustainable!!! and I can understand the cutbacks in the public sector are needed but as has been said the people paying their taxes are never the people that benefit from the basic services.
We have just lent Ireland billions and the get out ought to have been - come out of the Euro but it didn't happen.
If we have to have these austerity measures fine but the people that pay least gain the most!!!!
Myself and my neighbours cleared our drive at 05.30 this morning!
Rob ;D

you dont have to read it or comment if thats how you feel,... but to the majority of us who are stuck at home not earning anything , i would say its an issue worth raising,
because at this moment in time , i am not in the mood to talk about , best gloves, which van.. how big is your tank etc etc..
when i cant even get out to work.... its a rant.. my rant ;D
and you dont need to get involved if you dont want to ;)
-
boo hoo ho what a bunch of complaining miserable old farts people are today,
do you really need to be spoon fed like a baby by the nanny state? get out there and shovel the road yourself and fit some proper winter tyres on your vehicle because let me guess you still have the wrong tyres on for the conditions!
in germany, france etc and every other country in europe which suffers worse snow than here they cope just fine stop being such a bunch of complaining gits.
-
in germany its law to have winter tyres fitted which i have fitted on my van,
but in this country they spray grit everywhere for the inept british public
-
After all the bad snow in January our council left most streets with a grit bin. However even with this I can't see the point especially here where I live because its snowing again!!
-
your wrong ST1Allstar
i have winter tyres on the van which do not get up a slight incline in one foot of snow,
we dont live in germany france or timbucktoo,we live here in england, wher the powers that be, cannot or will not provide a service worthy of the billions we pay in taxes,
its not about moaning , oh and if i shovel my street , does that mean i will be able to work on all the estaes ::) ::)
but its a forum , and your views are as important as anyone elses,
however , the fact is we cannot work if the roads are blocked,
i trust that you have shovelled away all the snow on the estates you work in, and come back home to sit on the computer ,now all your work is done. ;D
-
must admit id rant too if my winter tyres id just bought didnt work. what van is it Gazza ,just out of interest ? i spose all the weight is in the back if you are wfp?

I watched that!! bloody country's going to the dogs! It's an absolutely crazy ratio of public to private sector far worse even than communist China !! (thats what really shocked me :o ) Jobs for the boys and their mates, wives, cousins, pets. We're all sleep walking into economic meltdown and no one is even talking about it, the only topic discussed seems to be who's gonna win X factor. I absolutely dispair.

People could do more for themselves rather than relying on the council. Buy some snow chains and you won't have a problem getting in and out of estates.
-
ST1 has a point about clearing snow. Over here in the developed world ( ;D ) you have to (by law) clear the path fronting your land. The roads are done by ze Gurmun council though. Winter tyres are compulsory from Nov 1st till March 1st. The tyre is a softer compound than summer tyres so will grip better in minus temps as it doesn't need to warm up first. In snow, there is no difference in tyres. All tread is filled and tyres are smooth in snow.
Here endeth the lesson brothers. All donations are welcome to my bank.
Details on request 8) 8) ;D

Just need the account number and the pin...
-
prob with snow chains, you have to remove them when you hit a clear main road... and put them on again for the snowy roads,
and they are like a rope puzzle to fit.
not recomended.
-
Lets face it..if the U.K were you're pet dog..you would have no issues putting the poor thing down..
Moved out, Cozy and I did..come on you know it's worth it...leave now while you have a chance.
;D ;D ;D ;D

Autosocks are meant to be good.

Not according to the AA report mate. Only last a few minutes.

Bear all this in mind on 6th April next year! ;) ;D
-
if a road isnt clear, try and find out if it has been adopted by the council, if it has been adopted fall and get a claim in
-
The way I see it, whats the point cleaning someones windows while the weather is this bad.
If you had a painter, painting your house would you let him continue in this weather, no because its a waste of money.
Driving conditions are bad, they always do the main roads first, to keep supplies coming through, whats the point of doing estates as soon as they would be done, it snows again, makes sense to me
Just take the week off and chill.
-
today they even didn't bother to do the main roads.i couldn't see any ploughs or gritting .you wonder why you pay council tax and road tax.yesterday my road was an ice ring.you must be able to get supplies

The Secret Is Winter Tyres
While carrying snow chains may be advised, the real secret lies in those black rubber things you use all the time – your motorhome’s tyres. Most UK vehicles, including motorhomes, come with summer tyres as standard. For the vast majority of drivers in the UK, summer tyres are the only type of tyres ever used, even in winter.
The truth is that summer tyres aren’t really that suitable for winter use, but you can get away with it unless it snows. That’s one reason why the UK grinds to a halt with a couple of inches of snow but European countries such as Austria, Germany and Poland don’t. In European countries where severe winters with lots of snow are usual, most drivers fit winter tyres to their vehicles in the autumn and use those until spring arrives.
In a number of European countries, winter tyres are a legal requirement during some months of the year and failure to comply can mean a fine (especially if it results in you causing an accident or obstruction). Again – check the AA’s European Driving website for full country-by-country details.
Winter tyres have two main benefits that make them more suitable for use in cold weather:
They have a slightly softer compound that remains softer and more flexible when it gets very cold, improving grip in slippery conditions. Summer tyres become very hard and stiff at low temperatures, reducing their grip.
Winter tyres tend to have a slightly deeper, blockier tread that grips snow more effectively, rather than just slipping over it
Summer tyres are proven to be less effective than winter tyres when the temperature falls below around 7 degrees Celsius, even without snow. In a motorhome, you can make a strong case for running winter tyres all year round; motorhome mileages tend to be low and ultimate driving performance isn’t important, so slightly increased tyre wear isn’t an issue.
Having winter tyres can be more useful than 4-wheel drive in snowy conditions – last winter saw plenty of modern ‘soft-roader’ 4x4s getting stuck in the snow because their wheels were shod with standard summer road tyres.
looks like we will be one of those european cold countries from here on ;D

I wish they would stop clearing everywhere, it is so much easier driving around on hard compact snow, we would be able to park and there would not be 3foot of snow every time the plough goes buy that needs digging to get back out.
