Title: 32 amp cable question
Post by: JSMC on November 24, 2010, 10:29:37 pm
at what point do you have to go up from 2.5mm cable to 4mm cable

have 3000w vac and plan on having 30m of 32 amp cable. Would 2.5 mm be adequate

You need to update specify "Arctic" cable to take the loads for anything over 3200w 2.5 is domestic  ;)

well diy electricians what size arctic cable would you recommend 1.5, 2.5, 4.0 or bigger as 1.5 is good enough for 16 amps & 3000w motor only requires a 13amp fuse how much bigger would you advise if your not an electrician at least do some homework before you advise I do have 17th edition  what about you???????????

Ooooh! Get you!  ;D

I recommend 1mm twin and earth lighting cable with a 30 amp fuse - just use matchsticks to push the wires home - nice and toasty on a cold day and the smell of burning wire shielding is quite "heady" for as long as it lasts. (about 3 seconds until the building catches fire!)*

For the avoidance of doubt, that bit in red is a "joke". Not a very funny one but a joke nevertheless!  ;)

Schoolboy error, I'm afraid.  You may have "17th edition" but you failed to ask the voltage, so you're guessing at the current.  At least do some homework before you advise...

Pride goeth before a fall and all that.

Well Charley B is an ex-window fitter and Harrier jumpjet runway cleaner so he must have the relevant "susstifcuts".  ;)

I'm afraid I don't have 15th, 16th or 17th edition, but I do have this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0040YQA8S/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller=

Which suggests max 20A for 2.5mm Arctic cable.

Now bear in mind that the guy who wrote that spec might only have 12th Edition, so be careful.

Joking apart, I think that if you want a definitive answer on something so important you need to speak to an electrician.  We're window cleaners.  The answers you'll get will tell you what we've done, which might be very different from what's safe and which might be wildly dangerous.

There is also a limit to how long the cable can be. But I'm not an electrician.

Sorry to bring this back up.Just remembered why shorter distances and arctic cable, if you run the wrong cable you could trip the internal fuse of the custys fuse box, not pro and they wont like it and you wont be able to finish the job IF your using their supply. So maybe use a smaller fuse on your side
