This week I have had three of those and more dog poo than is good for the soul. The last customer to ask me to leave it until the weather improved got the less than friendly response. I am looking forward to the day when my round is bursting and I can start to lose the customers who think they are doing you a favour by sometimes allowing you to clean their windows when it suits them >:(

It is a commonly held belief that windows should not be cleaned when it rains because ‘the rain will just make them dirty again. Is this really a fact?
The simple answer is 'no'. Although in some parts of Europe and the UK many people believe having their windows washed when it rains is a waste of time, in the USA, it is normal practice for window cleaners to carry on in all weather except storms and high winds.
Windows need cleaning because they get dirty not because they get wet. When chimneys were belching smoke it probably was true that by the time the rain drops reached the ground they were full of dirt and smoke particles. With the Clean Air Act that situation has changed. Nowadays the three major causes of dirty windows are dust, pollen and droppings. If these are present on the window glass when it rains, the residue in the rain attaches itself to the dirt and can often make the windows look worse. When the windows is clean the rain will simply runs off and the glass continues to remain clean.
When the fine weather comes you can see all sorts of so called 'window cleaners' 'popping out of the woodwork'. These are the amateurs and cowboys. Beware of them, they often do a poor job and take risks. They are part of the reason why the myth about cleaning windows in the rain has sprung up because these fair weather cleaners just don’t want to get wet.
So rain should not stop you having your windows cleaned. You can have them washed with pure water in all but the most torrential rain with excellent results.
Avoiding having your windows washed in wet weather, which is especially during the winter months really does you no good. Dirty windows look bad and stop the limited amount of sunlight getting into your home. No wonder people often feel depressed in the winter having look out of their grubby windows.

Well said Dave, now e-mail that to all my custards to convince them :)

I bet they'll have it done next month though as it'll be Christmas.
I personally would leave it till January at least, or drop it altogether.
-
i expect it in december that is why i stop around the 15, rush to get as many in as poss, then stop and start 3 weeks later

Don't you find your customers really want to see you on the run up to Christmas? They want their places looking nice for visitors.
Last year we were really slowed down with the amount of inside cleans we asked to do.
Just after Christmas when they're all skint is the problem! ;D

I had one like that yesterday,.. I drove out there (about 15 minutes away), only to be told the weather was too bad & she didn't want them done. Now this is a €100 house, so she gets a bit more leeway than most, plus I had other work in the area for the next few days,.. so I agreed to come back today.
I got woken by a text at 1am saying not to bother until next week because of the weather!
To top it off,.. the weather is fine today,.. completely dry and calm so far. >:( >:(
-
I clean in all weather light to medium, 3 strikes and your out after axplanations like daves response!
-
When I had my round I got fed up with people complaining about me coming when it was raining ,so all new customers were told I would be cleaning when it rained . ...if they weren't happy with that then I would not take them on. In the end the new customers were entering into an agreement so they could not complain ...if they, did move on and dump them ;)
-
:)i tell my customers i am a all weather window cleaner not a 8) fair weather window cleaner ;D
-
i seen it all but today i sore a window cleaner up a ladder which was 4 levels up on his own, talk bout wanting to die it was windy as hell and still is. would you lot go up a ladder in wind, i struggle on a calm day lol ;D

Tosh you got that right.
I have to start booking them in from the start of november, its a real book early to avoid dissapointment thing. I always make sure that I use the cash in January. There are some good bargains to be had when nobody else is spending.( though 20% vat next year)
Fair weather punters are fine, I just explain that I may show up randomly somewhere between monthly and quarterly ish. Most of them are happy with that, on those great s evenings when I fancy a bit of overtime I can pick them all up.
I see a lot of people angrily dump customers, but I find the best thing to do is to roll with it, and pick them up again when they do want it. Sort of not burning bridges.

Thanks for your replies and advice,
I did forget to mention this is one house in a large council estate which i have no wish to work in....
She virtually begged me to clean them 2 years ago, this is the 4th time in 2 years she has stopped me cleaning,
(but one of those was that awful big freeze last year, and i was not working anyway)
Its a tiny semi at £7.00... and i clean it when i get as near as i can on my travels,

A 1 AM text. Was it sent at that time or was it delayed in the network. If it was sent at that time, 100 euros or not, I would cancel it. That is seriously bad manners. Of course there is always the proviso about how much you might need the work.

To be honest, even at €100 its well underpriced for the time it takes,.. I was thinking of dropping it already only its in the middle of a bunch of other work,.. ::)

1 am text? You should have replied at 2 am- too late, I`m already on my way.......and get the kettle on.
