I want to do it mate, just always lived too far away from stations. You could even be on call when your working as long as your 5 mins away.

Would bed great as second income.

My mate is retained and we set up a forum a few years ago. We've got over 2000 members now

www.retainedfirefighter.com (http://www.retainedfirefighter.com)

Ask away on there ;)

Why would you use pure water and a brush to get a cat out of a tree? That`s cruel.
Get it down trad. Get up the ladders and bring it down  ::).

How do we go on for the kids pick up at three. Is it okay to use the big red wagon for this? And what about the pub, a lot of the carparks are a bit small for the two o'clock session.I believe a few tinnys inside the station is the norm, we'll have to suss it out.

Yeh we should set up our own fire service privately,

then the government can turn to us , when the fire fighters go on strike again, because they are trying to give them normal working hours, instead of playing pool and sleeping, whilst at work... and the other 20 hours they get off per week,...where they then go out window cleaning will have to stop !....

didums !!

yes it would be a good idea if we offered our services part time....

see how they like it.

I must admit certain windowcleaning/firemen seem to get some of the best affluent areas when it comes to domestic work. ???

well if you need a driver I am qualified in the green goddess and the red wagons, I have the blue light training and can operate the pump on both models. by the way it cost a small fortune to fly me to the uk to be trained, I was in Bosnia at the time, and they could not get me a military flight quick enough, so I returned via serbia, holland, manchester then to Edinburgh, oh then lost 4 weeks leave to cover the strikes, thanks lads, hope you got your pay rise

We will, but would like too think they are not too knackered from w/c or grass cutting.

23k if that is their basic is far too low for what they do

Im not gonna rise to any of you, im not a fireman at end of day (yet).

They do do 4 on 4 off, but they still do 40 hours, 10 hour days seeing all sorts of horrible sites. Could you rescue a burning child and watch them die? Id want a good wage for that.

What they choose to do on their days off is completely up to them, if they have the energy to do a bit more work then fairpay to them.

You guys whinge about people on dole who dont do anything...but then these guys are working too much???

I dont see any of your what any of your problems are, apart from a little jealously maybe.

Sensai,
We`re only joking, well some are.
And it`s only a bit of fun about what they do when they`re not on a job, not the job they do.
They do a vitally important job.

Im sorry but it does tick me off that all though some of you "may" be joking its said in jest.

I want to be a fireman more than anything, and i want to do it to help people...and yes id still carry on window cleaning to...i just dont get your issues.

Do any of you know just how hard it is to get in aswel? Its really hard work. The application is 6 questions of 300 words each which has to go through the selection process, then if, IF your accepted its then 4 hours of writtens, if you pass then 4 hours of physical tests. Then if youve got that far its the interview which is about 45 minutes long in front of a panel...i went for Surrey fire service last and there was 23,000 applications!

Ive passed the writtens and physicals but havent manage to pass an interview yet. But will try again, but means ive gotta start from scratch.

Could any of you do that? Then live with seeing sites that will stick with you forever and a day. I would hate for you guys to think of me in this way when i get in after all my hard work and hours and hours of preperation just to get in. Give em a break lads even if you are joking...i dunna find this one funny sorry.

It is a very good wage with benefits, and hardly anyone leaves the service because it is that good.

I think the only problem is when they have other jobs like window cleaning and can afford to charge less, thereby putting  the full time wc at a disadvantage competing with the price !

Theres loads of guys cheaper than me...but people still use me? Why? Because they choose to.

mate I have family that are retained firemen in rural locations, and my hat comes off to them, my hat also comes off to full time firemen, but the post about flying across Europe to cover the strikes was not made up, but what I do know is the wage of a private soldier is far less than a fireman and these young lads are covering strikes because the fire service feel they have been hard done to.

I have nothing against them doing windows or anything else as long as it is declared and a guy local to me openly admitted he cleaned carpets at a lot less than the established firms as he only wanted to pay for his golf trips away
Title: Re: firefighting

The joke`s not really about the firemen, it`s the cliched idea of firemen.
Like tradders in Mondeos working for beer money, accountants and wfp users being boring, chefs being fat and the clergy working one day a week.
It`s the cliche that`s funny, not the job.
Well, that`s true for me.
