Title: Soot from old fire place

Customer's renovating, wants soot cleaned off stone finished fireplace for a restored stone look - any suggestions on what I can use to remove the soot. Going to survey on Sat. am.

Depends on the stone?

Is the stone sealed?

Is the stone absorbent?

Or ceramic?

You have to be careful, as yo can stain the stone. But this is not my field.
