Just trying to get my end of year april 2009-april 2010 account finalised, and when adding up phone bills and other purchases that are subject to vat , unless you a re vat registered would you take off the vat element, ie phone bill for march is say £100 , do you put that figure as expense, or 100 - the vat ???

if you arnt vat registered, then you just put down the phone bill total including the vat

but arent you then including the vat in your tax exempt expenditure surely you have to be tax registered to do that , that is what is confusing me, but never thought of it till today usually i do just put in the full amount of purchases, but obviously most if not all have a vat element

whatever your bills are, phone, petrol, insurance, work equipment, they all include vat. They are a work expence and you claim the bill total inclusive of vat.
The only time you start messing about with vat is if you are vat registered, then you can claim back ll the vat you have paid too.
So if your phone bill is £100 inc vat, then you put £100 on your tax return

Orange billed me £2500 for 1 MONTH.
Thieving scum-bags told me if I switched from Voda to them they'd save me money every month on calls and texts then neglected to point out that they were charging me £3 per MB for data usage.

Not good eh, i get unlimited usage for £5 a month on phone, and pay 40 a month for contract and free music downloads, wife contract is only about £18 but she must overspend!
