72 is good enough if charged every day. But running off the van battery is a bit risky, you might be fine for years, but let's say you have the dream round, a full days work with no moving the van. On a cold winters day you might not he able to drive off at the end as you won't have enough juice left in the battery to turn the engine.

I totally agree. No matter that Dave Morris will tell you to the contrary. My 110 amp leisure battery went flat at the end of a big job the other day and that was with a pump controller and 30 amp intelligent split charge relay.

Hi mate how old is your 110 leisure batt because i would have thought you should get 2 days out off that with ease.

Mine's about 18 months old now. It normally lasts a week or two off the split charge relay without a bench charge. It went flat on a big job where I hadn't moved the van all day. Fine once I started the engine and lucky I was working right next to it by that time because obviously you can't lock the van with the engine running and the key in the ignition, not unless you've got a spare key. I do have another backup lead to the cigarette lighter just in case. Also I normally bench charge the night before if doing a really big job, but on this occasion I forgot. Still, it had only had one days use since a bench charge. Perhaps it's life is nearly over. I think I may have shortened it in it's early days when I took it camping and ran it flat running psp's and cool boxes off it.

i have had this problem for a long time now that why i put this post up to start with and asked dave morris about runing off van batt but like you i was concerned that the van batt standing for long periods of time would run it flat.  i have a 75 amp batt with 30 amp relay but i have not got the guts to try it of the van batt.

sorry left computer on,  it was ok,  van started when i wanted,  but flow would flash up bat   only moved the van about 12 time for a total of about 10 miles at most,  i think if sat in one spot all day might be a prob, but moving around it should be ok

Your battery is well on the way out then. I have a 110 Amp leisure battery and when it was in good condition I could go on for 2 weeks or so without ever charging it, that was on split relay as well. That was on big jobs, small jobs, big days, normal days and everything in between.

I have just found out in the last couple of days that I need a new alternator. Although it was just the pulley that's broke, I found it cheaper to get a whole new alternator. It's being fitted today so maybe that's contributed as they said the battery light was flickering at times. I 'll wait and see.

Ah I see, that could very well be. :)
