That's a clever press release.  He will have sent in the press release and they've taken the story up, nice free ad, and good luck to him.
I used a press release for my high end car detailing business about 6 years ago when that business was good and people still spent well and it gave me a nice free half page story (ad) in the local paper.

You'll find more info on writing a press release here - http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/detail?itemId=1073790962&type=RESOURCES

I like the idea of someone doing a months free work to master the trade!

I liked:

He said: "I liked the idea of being outside and working for myself, as I didn't like being in an office and working for someone else."

Genius.
