Title: When the vac brushes go...!
Post by: Deep Cleaning Solutions on October 18, 2010, 06:15:00 pm
....does the vac just stop all of a sudden?
One of vacs stopped when i was sucking out the solution tank.
The light still comes on,but nothing happens.(Any ideas?)
The guy who sold it to me gave me some brushes when he sold it me,
are they hard to fit? Cheers.

If the vac stops because the brushes have gone rather than just a blown fuse (that could also indicate worn brushes) the armature is usually that badly damaged that new brushes would burn out within minutes. I'm afraid it looks like a new vac is required.
By the way where about in Lancs are you based.
Dave.

How many hours had the vac done? It's most likely the brushes.  The armature of any motor should far outlast the brushes so replacing brushes makes the most sense.  You just have to remove the plastic cover and undo 2 screws then remove the brush holder and pop new brush in, then repeat for the other brush.

Sorry it's actually called the commutator, the part that the brushes are in contact with.

During 23 years using portable machines, when the brushes got that worn down that the vac motor stopped working, the Armature or Commutator, whatever you call it, was that damaged that new brushes would burn out within minutes. Replacing with new brushes was only ok, if replaced before their wear, stopped the motor.

Well I've had two sets wear on me and the commutator was fine.  The reason why brushes on nearly any motor are accessible and easy to replace is because the carbon brushes wear long before the copper commutators.  I just don't want Dave spending unnecessary  money in these harsh economic times.

You can also smooth out the commutator if needs be by attaching a hoover to the outlet of the vac to get it spinning, then with grade 600 sandpaper make contact with the copper as its spinning.

Well dave, prepared to be amazed.I replaced the brushes and the vac is working again, the old ones were down to a few mil. There did not look like there was any damage inside the motor.I ran the vac for a few mins, works fine but there is a slight vibration noise when it first starts up,but that's probably my shoddy workmanship ::) (i'm not a natural when it comes to stuff like this).I have 2 jobs tomorrow,so fingers crossed.Dave you asked where i was based.I'm in Accrington, but seem to work mainly in Blackburn.
My business is Deep Cleaning solutions... www.deepcleaningsolutions.co.uk

Well Dave I'm glad you managed with replacing the brushes. I was just offering my experience to you. I got through loads of brush sets trying to get away with just replacing them - it never worked for me once the motor stopped of its own accord, just loads of sparks and noise before it wore down withing a couple of minutes. I'm sure others have this experience too, however I hope your solution is long lasting.
I saw you were from Lancs and your username is similar to my website address, hence my question.

No Dave, I have no problem with that at all, obviously if you were just around the corner and using that name it could cause customer confusion, but that's not the case, so no worries.
I hope your business goes well, I do occasionally get the odd job in Blackburn and Accrington but they usually come from recommendation.
Dave.
