Has anyone put their tank on one side of the van?
Would it be too dangerous because of the weight on one side?
(It would be a 650ltr tank by the way)

al long as u dont go around corners u will be ok, but it across the middle up against the bulk head

The reason I mentioned it is becasue it if goes against the bulkhead it will be in the way of something else.
I may have to get a flat tank and use the space above it.

Must be mad,cant see that being very safe. Also you will have the best part of 700kg on one side of the van,wont be good for the suspension.

We have ours across the back over the rear axle>

For safety reasons it would be very unwise to put a 650litre tank on one side of your van, unless you have a counter weight on the other side.

Your suspension will be dangerously overloaded on one side. Have you driven behind a lorry where the load had shifted to one side? And every corner you feared it was going to fall over? That's exactly what will happen to your van.
With the tank like that you will be having an accident, guaranteed. Don't do it. :D

what about but two new tanks and have two 300 ltr tanks one each side

as erith said u can get tanks to fit over wheel arches ( in side van )they r called saddle tanks i think .or get a fat git to sit in passenger side

Don't mean to be rude but surely the answer is obvious. That set up would just be dangerous. It's just common sense surely.

If you put it to one side it'll be in the way of something else, oncoming traffic.

Mines behind the seats in the middle (though it pretty much goes all the way across)
One side = bad idea.... Get a layflat tank and build a frame ove it to store your other stuff

may be wrong as mine is a 650l tank, and was told the correct place is where some of you guys tanks are ,.. behind the seats/bulkhead.......as that is the strongest part of the load area, and the correct balance for the van,

Like I said, the reason I mentioned it is because I want to use the space behind the bulkhead for something else. I didnt think anyone would have put it to one side. 300 on each wheel arch sounds good though. I think I'll look into that. I should get my new van in a couple of days so I'm think of the best way to kit it out and maximise the space.

I assume two tanks to go over the wheel arches are expensive ... is that right?

Gardiners used to sell saddle tanks... not sure of they still do

Are you sure ??? I think you will find it is illegal as the weight would not be evenly distributed over the axles.

yes as long as your not over weight on the axels frunt & rear ,but all weight to one side thers note in the trafk regs ,and this comes from my fiting days as one of the gangs had a van put over the way scal at gidersum by minesty of transport ,and it wos put on it 4ways frunt axel rear ax and near side weells and off side weells ,the out cum wos 1 ton moor on os weells ,and nothing that thay do /. >:( ??? ??? ??? ??? thats the minesty men :( :( :( :( :( >:( >:( >:( ??? ??? ??? ??? :'( :'( :'( :'(/

Im thinking of an upright tank. If i put where shown on the pic the boxed wheel arches will give it some support, but how could I make it stable and safe? I wouldnt want the tank to fall over if i brake hard!
Does anyone else have a tank there?

Having the tank there is probably the best place for stability & weight distribution.
Also,.. in a crash you have a bit of space for movement (when the tank frame distorts) before it gets near the passenger compartment. Upright tanks fitted right up against the bulkhead do worry me a bit!

I've had a look at those. They are three times the price, and there isn't enough room for them.
What is the best way to secure a tank as in the picture? There are eye bolts types things fitting in the van in the perfect place for the tank, but would a carefully positioned ratchet strap or two be enough?

Sorry if I've missed something previous, but depending on your tank size would you be overloading the back axle? What is the max allowance for that axle?

The tank will be 500 litres.
