this will be my first winter wfp.
1. do you have salt or grit with you in the van to spread on pathways or do you miss the window over the doors on certain properties(esp if custy is elderly)in very cold weather?
2.do you trad more ground floor windows due to water issues?
3.i have a big DI vessel in a storage compartment outside my flat.is it best to bring it into my flat during freezing nights?
4.do you fill up in the morning on freezing nights or get a heater?
5.can you get a heater that you can just turn on and leave overnight on low without a lead to a power supply?
6.any of you guys had problems with freezing pumps WHILE YOUR WORKING?(trolley will be brought inside every night for charging)
7.any other tips guys?
many thanks in advance

I am interested in any replies to no.5. I have just moved house and have to park my van a long way from my house. So no oil filled radiator in van for me this year ???
-
no 5 you could get a night heater (the same as they have in hgv's) not cheep tho
-
Thats a complicated list to answer, I think you will find we all have slightly different answers. I suggest that whatever answers you have to the winterwise problems, should be completed before they turn the clocks back. We went down to -12 degrees, everything froze solid. Unless you took it indoors. In the mornings which warmed up to -6 things still froze even the car door locks internals froze open and or closed,so I had to hook bungees on them and not lean going round corners,,,,
5 try quality paraffin glass house heaters and learn how to use them.
-
you could get a calour gas heater just put on 1 bar overnight , or a paraffin heater but these leave a smell .
-
what do you mean learn how to use them jeff? whats involved in using them to make them so difficult? and how would I learn how to use it? Seen some other week in B&Q but remember posts last winter about them smoking and leaving everything black

Winter is not a problem, just when it snows or is well below freezing. Use common sense and your be fine. Just put a oil fill radiator in your van over night and set accordingly.
-
I was simply responding to number 7 in your list. In other words stop worrying, it probably wont snow any, it probably wont drop below -3 for more than 3 days and if it does it wont matter as you'll be all caught up as you're WFP now.
-
heaters for vans salt, robbing grit ,from the council and get
yourself some barrels from car wash just incase temps dip
to extreme temps overnight likelast winter you can fill them
up bring inside leave next to rads overnight it will at least
give you head start in the morning if you have had any problems
with van system.
oh yeah and bring your poles and brushes in aswell
and one last thing dont come onhere and join all the
whingers finding any excuse not to work ;D ;D
and yes im not working today because ive finshed for
week, but i will be getting my wets on later to stick some
cards through some doors :)
-
Last winter was worst in my 23 years wc. So hopefully when the next one comes I'll be out of here. Although temps were extremly low and everything froze I still managed to get 95% of my work completed. So I'm not worried.
-
@ dazmond this will be my 2nd winter w.f.p
And because like me you are using a trolley you will have no issues with freezing weather, just bring your trolley in every night!
i also was told that resin in vessels works better at room temp so i keep that indoors to! oh any the wet brush will freeze as well so bring your pole in as well!
That is about the only difference from summer. i trad ground floor anyway.
hope this helps mate

-
@ neil...
Also if your traditional, have you noticed using a squeeqy and applicator is like trowling walls?
its all the same really at the end of the day its just getting rid of trail lines on a wall surfice!
-
Mate i'm ****** from plastering,knees/shoulder/all f*****from spreading. looking foward to being a shiner, and yeah your spot on with that ;D ;D
-
Unger glacier gloves for when it's close to freezing, oil filled radiator with thermostat in van overnight to prevent freezing and a spare hose to transfer water into van should the storage tank or transfer hose freeze up.
Decent waterproof, windproof and breathable workgear helps keep you dry and warm to keep morale up helps.
Insulate everything possible with silver foiled bubblewrap to prevent freezing in first place.
Also keep some spare connections (ez snap or whatever you use)
-
@ neil
so you havnt started yet?
like i said you'll take to it like a duck to water, cos its all about chasing lines on a wall! but its not like trowling up gear thats gone off and killing your arms, its easy work mate! and like me your probably used to dadgy scaffolds so the heights are ok too!
best of luck, and good luck knocking those doors and get ready for "no thanks weve got a window cleaner"
1 in about 50 will have a quote!

I LEARNT THE HARD WAY A FEW AGO HAD 2 WEEKS OFF FOR CHRISTMAS THEN FROST SET IN FOR ANOTHER 2 WEEKS ,IT IS OK TAKING THE CHILL OUT OF YOUR VAN BUT WHEN THE WATER STARTS TO RUN THROUGH IT IT FREEZES IN THE PIPES, I GOT MYSELF A HEATWAVE COUPLE OF YEARS AGO REALLY GOOD, OVERNIGHT YOU HAVE A FROST SETTING AND IF IT DROPS TO 2 DEGREES IT SWITCHES ITSELF ON AND CIRCULATES HOT WATER AROUND THE SYSTEM AS YOU PLUG HOSEREELS BACK INTO THE TANK,THE AMOUNT OF MONEY I LOST HAVING TWO WEEKS OFF WITH THE FROST COST ME THE SAME AMOUNT FOR THE HEATWAVE, KEEPS ME WORKING ALL YEAR ROUND, NO WORRIES OVER THIS WINTER
-
