Title: Employing - hidden costs?
Post by: AuRavelling79 on September 14, 2010, 04:35:59 pm
When you employ I understand that you should have employee liability and that it is way more expensive than owner-operator. But what about N.I. and tax? And if you employ someone else do you have to do PAYE for yourself or can you still be self-employed. Do you need to be a Director?

Anything else I've missed like hols and sickness etc.?

You can't be a director unless you become a Limited Company ;)

Do you (paternity) if you are a one man band? I thought some of these rules - like sick pay and holiday pay were only if you had 5 plus employees.

no i think it applies to any gold

ni is about 20 - 40 quid a week for you as employer depending what you pay ie between 250 - 400 a week

I have the exact figures somewhere

insurance is about £600 for employers liability maybe a bit more, then just your normal overheads like you have as sole trader for employee but you have to bear in mind holidays, sick pay etc and most annoyingly how to cover work if there off for say 3 weeks on holiday if you are working too its hard, this is the main problem i have as someone with only one employee, you struggle if theyre away, or in my case as he cant drive if im ill neither of us are working or if im on holiday too but this will change soon when driving :)

but it is a headache ....

I was thinking 3 days a week part-time stan - I could do with having someone cover my "worst" £600 worth of work and building the rest as I go. I also have a nice little option on about £800 worth of work that I can add into the mix.

sick pay is not something an employee must pay all though they will be entitled ssp whih you get back or an let them claim it them selves.

True enough, but if you are on the cards I always thought it was a given, if it wasn't Id know the person employing wasnt worth working for.

i know this is illegal  but the cost depend on what type of business you have, by this i mean, if i have a lad out with me 2 days a week cash in hand work on the same van as me, then the main costs are his wages,  but if you are like dave morris vans and lads then u have lots like 28 days holiday, insurance, employers and van, extra equipment, ni contributions  Uniform , waterproofs, extra equipment repairs, mobile phone, extra water production, sat nav
