Title: Need a 40 ft pole - which one??
Post by: Dave Riley on September 11, 2010, 09:47:31 pm
Hi guys, i need a 40-45 ft pole, have a 35 ft fibreglass one at min but is way too flexy.  Im thinking that carbon fibre is the way to go, but dont want to spend a fortune. Does any one have a second hand one they want to do a deal with? Or can any one reccomend a reasonably priced new one? Thanks for your help!! Dave.

I pushed the boat out and bought a new 30 footer a couple of weeks ago, it was the Glyder from ionics.  Have to say it is really good, would def recommend.  The main thing for me was that it collapses down nice and small makes it much easier to use IMO.  Light as a feather too compared to my old glass fibre one, the difference is pretty unbelievable.  Not particularly cheap, but I've had cheap poles in the past and found they just dont last and are heavy, so i guess you do get what you pay for.  My advice is, if your going to be using it as your main pole, then don't skimp on it because it makes a real difference to your work day.  (I dont mind having a cheapo pole for something that is quite easy, like the 18ft region, but I nowadays you really need a decent 30 footer for all-day use with the amount of town-houses there are now)

They do a 40ft version, which i think is exactly the same as my 30 footer, but has an additional 2 sections.  My 30 foot glyder was £500 including vat and delivery(also- i think ionics have made an error on their online shop because it didnt charge me for delivery, but I know that they do charge it if you phone up and order, so if you do order something, make sure you order it online before they realise and put it right).  Not sure how much the 40 footer is though.  My advice is go for the one with the "residential" head.  I tried the commercial head one out, but I hated it and thought it was heavy and expensive.  The adjustable angle crank, what they call the "multipole" head, is much better and not to mention lighter, but each to his own.

Actually I have been thinking about buying the extra 2 sections so that I can make my 30 footer into a 40 footer when needed, but I'm not sure if that would work/ be possible.
