anybody got any idea how much employee liability insurance is for trad workers? i know you must have it by law if you employ ,im curious about what the figures are
-
I'm sure many trad workers don't have insurance, I'm also sure that many do.
Insurance will still be no more than £200 for trad workers up to 1st floor, any higher than that then I havnt a clue.
-
full pl and el is approx £6/700 with 1 person working with you.

cheers for that info. i have been wondering how this employee insurance works. for example in a town i work is a medium size totally legit trad firm, who pay low and are quite often advertizing in the local paper for fresh workers. to my mind this is a hell of a risk, though maybe they keep the new workers doing downstairs only for a few weeks or more .

many won,t have insurance I,ve found out that only the large organisations who we work with are really the only ones that ever ask to look at our details.

Most insurance policies in Europe have a standard clause saying that any activity outside of the law is not covered. With WAHR legislation and the ease & availability of wfp etc, unless ladders are the only "practicable" option for the climb where the accident occurred, any insurer wanting to squirm out of paying up has a ready made loophole,.. basically the insurance policy may not be worth the paper its printed on.

What about painters & decorators, electricians, roofers, aerial installers etc? Do they also have no insureance?

Other trades do not have a "practicable" alternative,.. therefore are still working within the law.
-
Nat there is a company that cover my area that have at least 6 vans on the road and at least 30 employees, I know one of the brothers who own the firm and they are visited every six months from the health and safety and are given the ok to continue using ladders, they do have the one wfp set up but only use it on second floor and above, when I took on my lad I got him on work experience from my local council and they funded his move into my employment and via their health and safety department I was able to get him on a safe ladder use course paid by the council.
So I really do not think it is as simple as you say
-
I know ladders aren't banned,.. I'm just saying if the insurers want to squirm out of paying up, the way is open,..

yes I know mate ;) I am just pointing out that it is not as clear cut that everyone makes out, and I think the insurance company's would be hard pushed not to pay out if this firm is given the all clear by H&S,
I am wfp and only use trad when I have to but it is a very grey area and just to add no insurer has even asked me what method I use and I find this a bit strange

ronnie they cover a big area and one van goes to each estate ;D I have counted at least 8 ladders on each van, but they tend to work in teams of three, I know they have ten vans but are only using 6 at the moment but tonight I seen the pick up with 6 sets of ladders on it so they are obviously doing ok. I pick up a lot of work from them but they aren't bothered as they work on quantity compared to quality, I heard they lost a hundred customers in one week but they were still advertising for new staff, I see an old boy out canvassing daily and they have been going for years so they must be doing something right,

stu just a bit of tongue and cheek pal :)
