Title: Steve Barnett

Wondered of you might have any comment on the " stinky " carpet I posted about Steve. Being an experienced carpet fitter can you suggest something to eliminate the smell that seems to be coming from the binding adhesive in certain carpets / rugs.

Hi Robert,

Fortunately, I haven't come across this problem yet when cleaning.

As Doug suggests, this is fundamentally a problem that occurs with cheap, imported product.

Years ago, the cheap foam that was applied as a secondary backing used to send some dogs into a chewing frenzy, due to the smell it emitted.

Due to the types of properties I clean, I don't expect to come across this anytime soon, but it's worth looking out for, as for solving the problem, if John Kelly hasn't found a solution yet then I doubt if one exists.

One of the reasons I choose to stick with established British manufacturers when I supply carpets, is the knowledge that the products they use in the manufacturing process will be consistent, they won't try and save a buck by using sub-standard materials.

Thanks for your comment Steve. I remember when the Belgian invasion started and the concern it created with the UK manufacturers.

This problem has never been identified in any discussion or communication or factory visit I've taken part in over the years unlike the endless warning about solvent use on some carpets but I suppose no carpet manufacture is likely to state " You must avoid spilling fluid on our carpet as it will react with the bonding and cause a smell "

Surely if a custy's carpet starts smelling after a spilage or indeed, a clean, the carpet isn't really fit for puspose. Won't the customer have rights to a replacemeent carpet from the manufacturers seeing as it's their fault that a problem exists...?

Just wondered :)

I would agree about the Not fit for Purpose comment as did the retailer who confirmed he was aware of a problem as a number of carpet cleaners had the same problem as me.
Unfortunately............it seems the manufacturer has gone bust !

I know you're working on it Robert but i think it woulkd be a great help to everyone if you could tell us what the initial clues might be, ie cost per sq/m, long pile/twist etc, the era when this rubbish was produced, who the retailers are etc etc
