Title: Glides
Post by: james roffey on July 20, 2010, 10:40:02 pm
Got my new machine a couple of weeks ago a 600psi Airflex Turbo did first carpet with it and my back and shoulder was aching next day the wand just stuck to the carpet, unable to push it could only pull, so i though this is why they have wands with glides, its definately a step up from the Ninja i have.
So called Cleansmart ordered a glide when it arrived i used it on our through lounge used it without on the first half and with on the second have to say it was much easier and left carpet dryer too  ;D

Sounds good - assuming your Airflex has adjustable pressure, you might not need / want to use all 600psi on every job. Especially domestic carpets, doubt you'd need to use that much pressure.

James

You are ignoring the advice given on here again.
Derek says glides are only for girls.  ;D
Join the club.

David, you are correct - you dont need 600psi to clean a carpet, mostly I keep at 400 but could easily do the job at 300.  Use the Rotovac 360i and you can go really low - 200psi or maybe even less.
The wand "sticking" to the carpet though is not caused by the solution pressure, as you probably know.

I have never used it at 600 psi the highest i have been was 400psi.
although i thought with the glide i could give my stone floor in my kitchen a go put some powerburst down very strong mix and turned it up to 600.
wow  :o what a good job it did it's only evr had a mop across it in ten years

We run glides on both our wands, Wouldnt be without them now, Makes working a breeze and we also benifited with quicker drying times ;D, It looks like glides are a contraversal subject :o

They are expensive John.

Wife said "how much for a piece of plastic?"

They are not plastic of course, but are expensive.
However, if you look after it then it should last.
Just need to keep away from grippers protruding up at the edges of a carpet.

Im onto my second glide as the 1st one started to affect the suction quality due to damage. So take care of it as they are expensive to replace.

some of you must be nuts, 350 psi is the most i generally use and what price a bad back against £100 for a glide?  i think without glides i would have packed it in at least 5 years ago,

I have to confess to not knowing what a Glide is, or having previously heard of one.

Anyone got a link to a recommended one please?

Cheers,

Dave.

Other suppliers of course.

Glides can be wand specific so be careful when buying on.

They are teflon, so slippy (they glide over the carpet)

Can get them with holes, or slots, or a combination of holes and slots.

I prefer the slots only, but each to there own.

It's about time the wand manufacturers starting building stainless steel glided heads onto their wands. That would get Derek going, may even get him to break his silence on the subject ;D

Simon's spot on there should be no need to spend an extra £100 or so for a carpet wand to function better.

everyone knows my stance on the gay blade, sorry girl glide, oops i mean green glide.

if you can get airflow through the back of a carpet then a glide is a step backwards, if you can't get airflow through the back of a carpet then a glide is a must. there, ive said my piece now you girls can carry on without me.

Thanks Joe - I've dropped them an email to check whether that glide will fit my three machines.  £120 does seem very expensive for a piece of 'placca' to fit on the bottom of the wand! But if it reduces strain as much as it suggests it'd be worth it.  No machoism here, if it makes life easier, I'll gladly join the 'girl glides' !   ;D

i couldnt imagine cleaning a carpet without a glide!! much much much easier than without one (i have a dodgy back so my glide is purely to ease the pain!!)

Well before I invest in a glide, I've gotten hold of some "MAGIC LIPS" (as suggested by Nick @ Solution, cheers Nick). I know it's not a Glide but worth a try first, as they're only £19!

Also, thanks to Steve Gunn, who's offered to let me try a wand with a full glide fitted. Cheers Steve, I'll be in touch.  8)

Simon

I think the reason Teflon is better than steel is because it has a lower friction coefficient than any other material. So it glides better. Sounds like engineers mumbo jumbo to me. I also hate the fact that I have to buy a separate part to make the wand perform better, but until the manufactures sort it out I won't be without one. I would rather be called names by my huge shouldered colleagues that don't use them. :)

Teflon does have one of the lowest friction coefficients for the purposes of glides.
Unless you are stocky & knee high to a grasshopper - in other words no more than 4' 8" - you must be mad not to use a glide if you operate a t/m.

I can see Derek is 'stocky' - didn't appreciate he was a little squirt ;) ;)
