Title: Bank getting funny about cheques
Post by: Londoner on July 17, 2010, 08:09:59 am
I know this has been done before but my bank is getting funny about me paying in cheques. More to the point the woman behind the counter is moaning. They want me to open a business account which I will do but I'm not going to do it with Lloyds They charge you 28p a cheque plus £5 a month account fee.

How many cheques do Santander let you pay in before they start charging you?

i take it you are paying it in to your personal account then,  go get pay pal or allow custy to pay direct to your bank account much easier,  as it can take me up to 2 weeks to take a cheque to the bank

Natwest just gave me 2 years free banking on a business account

my own bank ,Hsbc, phoned me up , quizzing me about a few cheques i paid in to my personal account.  my reaction has been to open 2 new personal accounts ,with Halifax and one with Nationwide . this is to funnel cheques into.
i opened both these online, with the Halifax i had to go into the branch to prove my identity and had to deposit £100 to get given a chequebook
but suprisingly with the Nationwide i never had to prove who i was and never had to put any money in to open my account. ive now got the debit card and cheque book but have never actually been in to the branch

I bank with Halifax, they have the automatic cheque deposit machines I put around 10 cheques every other day and never had any problems. You even get a print out with small photo copies of the cheques which helps with reconciliation.

Most of my customers wouldn't know what paypal or internet banking was. They think cheques are high tec.

But I know this trouble with the bank is part of a strategy on their part to knock cheques on the head eventually.

This has been the norm for the last few years.....all about bonus points for the bank.

I put all my chqs in a  Quick Payment envelope and put it in the letterbox. That way they don't hassle me ;)

How many cheques do Santander let you pay in before they start charging you?

You have to pay in at least £1000 a month for free banking.

Its the number of cheques it the total value monthly.

I take this into account when I price up a job.
I normally add £1 when I price up a job, this is to cover paypal payments and business account payments.
I am with Lloyds and even though I am still under the Free business banking I still get an invoice with how much it would of cost.
Each month it only cost about £15 which is covered by the customer.

Im with lloyds and opened a business account, not really worth it in my opinion, they charge you per cheque etc etc, then you have to wait for 7 days for cheques whereas with personal accounts are free and the funds are in the account, i know not available but at least its been accounted for, ive come un stuck a few times when ive got few 100's in my business account and needed it at least accounted for in personal account and couldnt get to it!

i think santander let you post 100 cheques a month before they charge you they also send you free stamped addressed envelopes to post your cheques in any post box which only adds an extra day onto cheques clearing

With Santander, if I pay cheques in by ATM, they are clear on the same day of the week one week later so long as I don't deposit them late in the day and so long as their are no bank holidays.
Their big downfall is that they won't show the BACS references.  This is OKish if you only take a small numbver of BACS payments but, as cheques reduce and BACS increase, it could be a nightmare trying to figure out who has paid.

Just a warning note about putting cheques into the atm machine , sometimes it cant scan the right amount on the cheque ( ie a cheque for ten pound it reads as 0ne penny ! )   Make sure when it asks you to confirm the amount you check it is correct !

Surley after your 18 months free banking you can either change banks or you can start putting your bank charges against your tax ?

Yes of course but its a game of cat and mouse. Never spend money if you don't have to (first rule of business) and why give it to the banks who still make big profits and pay themselves fat bonuses.

Anyway you only get effectively 25% of what you pay out offset against your tax bill.

If you have a business account, all the charges can be offset against tax!
You should get an invoice for all of the bank charges, obviously if you bounce cheques and miss direct debits and they charge you then that is a different matter but every day running costs of the business bank account can be offset.

Matt

I think what he means is if your charges for the year are say £100, then you will only reclaim 25% of that back from tax

Tom I know what he was trying to say mate, if the everyday running cost of your business bank acoidiot is £100 for the year that £100 is offset so you wont pay tax on that £100 which would be £23 in tax.
Further more having a business account in your business name will show customers that you are a bonefide company.

But by the time they figure that out they are writing you a cheque. Therefore they are already a customer so I don't see the attraction?

Just as a matter interest A mate workrd for a bank clearing house, Were all cheques and changew between Banks. He told me all checuea a cleared at the end of each day if not they would not go home till it was.I asked does it take so long on my account.Answer all bank have to by law have acertain amount of cash and the longer they keep your cash the less chance they will get into trouble. So we are keeping there cash flow up.I ownwd a estate company id South AFrica and the Trust account were all deposits on house sales was keeped would bring in about 5000 a year on interest. Now thats a lot of cash for nothing.

I have payment methods on my website which states all cheques must be paid to MB Window Cleaning. rather than Matthew Buchan. they see that before they even contact me.
