Title: Cleaning out an IBC
Post by: Sir Squeaky on July 12, 2010, 05:05:44 pm
My IBC was previously used to hold bleach.

Now I know that I'm producing 000 TDS as I've checked it, but water that comes out of the tank was around 078.
I've blasted the inside with a hose for a bit and it's now reading 051.
Is there a good way to do it or do I have to keep on the same way...?

If you have a swimming pool supply shop near you try and get some sodium thiosulphate ( you will only need a cup full) this comes in the form of large granules which dissolve and will neutralise the sodium hypochlorite (bleach) that is clinging to the inside walls of the ibc tank. Then rinse the whole lot out, this should do it!  :)

Cheers Tony, not sure there is anywhere like that around, but RZ said something about a neutraliser, so maybe that's what he meant...

Sounds like you may have hassle getting the bleach off.

I would bin it and go round some farms and get another one. Thats where I got mine from.

They dont store any chemicals in them so they are ready to use after a quick wash.

No way I'm binning it, can't go buying another one, and had a nightmare getting in round the house and over the fence!

Will do Mike.

Now I've got another problem. Can't get a good connection to the tap. >:(
Jubilee clips don't seem to stop it spraying out.

rog, just fill it pump water out and clean more, if you want to be anal, use ro water to pressure wash it.

I cleaned 4 ibc's out a few months back doing it this way, I fill one with ro only water then pressure washed the rest out with it, let all water out after and all water is 000. I am guessing your using a hand held and start and end and not a fixed tds meter ?
Yes I'm rinsing it out with the tap open, then closing the tap, putting a bit of pure in and then getting some from the tap after a few minutes.

Here you go...
RO connector on the right. Jubilee clip broke, so been connecting it to the hoselock tap fitting.
But that's not too snug either, Which is annoying, as it was 7 quid!

dont they greatly reduce flow roy? sure i read they did and were not suitable for ro use because of this

that what mike has put a link 2 is to feed your ro rog, so you dont need that.

if your neighbour has outside tap ask them if you can plug on their just to wash the tank out.

as someone has already said just rinse it well a few more times then put it to fill, then check the tds from the top, im sure this is what i did with mine.

Roger. for your ibc bleach problem. Just connect hose to your tap (when you get a fitting sorted) and just fill it to overflowing and empty it out, Do this 3 or 4 times should be ok.

I need something unless I can get some better clips.

That one that was put on last night has a broken clip already, and I only took it off once!

Blimey that's a lot of water. Can't let that much out onto the patio!
I'll have to wait until I've got the IBC>hoselock connector, so I can put it down the drain.

you can get ones that are designed for that kind of tap but they are still not great. i keep one spare just in case my outside tap freezes, and yes i broke the clip as well so use pliers to tighten it

if you get one of those fittings mike put a link up to,attatch it to the cold water supply under youe sink(no tools needed)

then run the pipe under the kitchen units toward the back door, the inlet pipe from the ro can have a pipe joiner in the end, put it through the cat flat and plug it in to the other pipe,

when it not being used you can pull it apart and put it back through the flap,

no drilling, no tools.

hope this makes sense

Yeah I think so.
How does it attach under the sink then? Hasn't something got to be taken off or pierced? Otherwise it would be running out now. ???

yes mate it pierces but if you move just leave it, landlord wont even see it.

dont think you need a joiner either you can use some of that 5mm pipe i left with you.

Actually I'm going to hold on the order for now.
I've got some sort of connection, and there isn't a pipe or tap to connect to under the sink. I recently had a new kitchen and it's all hidden behind the unit, just braided hoses come through two holes.

Main thing is to rinse this tank out.
Thought I might get my brush in there and have a scrub, that'll surely speed up the process...

Woohoo! Water from tank is now 015, and that was taken from the bottom too!

I got my wfp in there and gave it a good scrub before flushing it out again with a half-fill.

That's nearly useable already, so once it's filled that should be well into single figures. :)

Just bash the back panel off, and put the pipe cutting attachment thingy on the cold water pipe, drill a hole through the brick work (I'll do it), feed a hose through, attach a tap and screw it to a wall, and bob's yer uncle.

It's so easy, even I could do it!
