Title: Buying from a bod in a suit
Post by: LQQK on July 06, 2010, 10:58:38 pm
Yesterday I was cleaning a small unit on an industrial estate. On the estate there is a WFP supplier based who fit out vehicles, sell kit (poles, brushes etc) and supplies resin bla bla bla.

Anyway one of the sales boys there approaches me with a view no doubt to trying to secure some business off me as my van is sign-written etc.

He had the real real gift of the gab and I liked his positive attitude. But you iknow what I got thinking half way through the conversation with him that he had never done a decent physical days work in his life and probably didnt have the faintest idea of what working outdoors was like, what being self-employed was like and the concersn/issues/worries and priorities we have as self-employed people trying to earn a living in an unpredictable climate (be that the weather climate or the business climate at the moment).

I came away thinking 'who the hell does he think he is, he hasnt got a clue!!'

Would you fall for the gab of someone who worked in a suit?

Think it depends on the person in the suit tbh.

SOme jumped up little twot in a suit is not going to sell me anything, yet a person that knows there stuff and the markets we are in; could well sell stuff as long as hes not in his birthday suit as that would be just weird.

Depends what he was selling, in this industry definatly not, I would only buy from a "hands on" salesperson.

My thoughts too.

I hate to think of someone trying to be clever and making out that theyve got some element of an induistry cracked then insinuate you are making a mistake if you dont go along with their chain of thoughts. Especially if they obviously havent got hands on experience.

In my previous life I sold nice shiny new motors ... over 20 years prob sold about 3000 cars (150 a year as an average) ... how many suits did I own .... ZERO ... didnt want to appear as a typical shiny suited car salesman I think the customers preferred dealing with someone dressed in a shirt and tie  :)

does not have to mean a suit; a suit can be off putting to many, in the 80's maybe suits where all the rage with flecked trousers to match  ;D
You have to remember that it is the person that sells it to someone not the suit they are wearing.

it sounds like he got off to a good start and you were impressed but then he tried to force your opinion in his sales patter and that narked you and  so he failed .

I don't care who I buy off, could be a suit or it could be someone dressed in burmuda shorts and hawaiin shirts, as long as the price is right

When I first came to the U K and saw all the men in Dark suits I remember asking who had died. A good sales man would always mimic his clients or customers  to make a connection with them and find common ground. Only a fool would wear a suit to sell to a windy as we will never wear a suit. Dress like us, speak like us and be like us and you will sell to us. Even when I convince I will take on the persona of my customers as I look for common ground to find there needs and wants. Read any sales and marketing book and you will see power dressing is not for the our industry. Some time these guys try to overwhelm you with B / S and intimidate you into buying.
