how many of you actually bother to register your business names and do,s it really matter if you don't ?.
-
you should register your business if you dont use your name
as you dont have to use the ltd name to trade under, but if some one registers ur name ir blue monkey they they can stop you using it
-
your wife could be company secretary than you could go ltd the assets of your ltd company could not be touched by your creditors including your house if you own it, but this is not the case with sole traders i beleive but the question was who bothers to register there business name.

I have mine registered here...
www.duport.co.uk
You can register your business name as a dormant company with them and they will take care of all the paper work with companies house on an annual basis, for a fee of course.
This ensures that your business name cannot be snapped up by someone else.

matt
go to staples and ask for the company formation forms, about 16 quid, fill them in get solicitor to sign and send off and wait a week, thats all it is
-
u can do it next day fro abotu 50 quid i think
-
yes matt
No you dont.
You can register a name but not trade as the registered name.
I have reserved my businesses name so no-one else can use it, which saves my from having to become embroiled in all the additional paper-work and tax returns of a Ltd company (let alone the additional costs!!)
If you wish to just reserve a name all it costs is an admin fee on a yearly basis for your non-operating accounts to be submitted to companies house.

im confused..com!
my accountant told me to register name with a company (forget who now) it costs about £80 a year ..and this stops anyone else using your name...am I talking about the same thing here or have I got the wrong end of the stick?
-

Buying a Ltd name isnt what Matt was asking, he was asking do you have to BE Ltd to register a name
Do you have tio be a limited company to register your name at companies house?
Matt
You said yes, which isn't correct.
I have bought my businesses name, the Ltd edition, I dont use it, nor operate as it. It is simply reserved should I choose to go Ltd and also prevents anyone else from going Ltd under that name. My accounts are submitted yearly as non-trading, but Im not Ltd!
