If you are targeting "mortgage" he/she  may be right. If you are targeting some carpet cleaning terms then that statement is not really valid (and shows lack of web marketing experience).

That's the difference between a web designer and an internet marketer.

It's a bit like the difference between a bricky and an architect.

Get the marketer to design the site and then give it to the webby to build. Never let a web designer loose on your marketing!

OK enough of me making "clever" statements.

Gordon,

Getting indexed and getting ranked for terms are two different things. Get indexed first.

1/ Put the website address (URL to start with .. the www.  bit) in your signature here. This forun gets crawled and the search engines will follow your link from here and discover your site.

2/ Get your web designer to add an XML sitemap to your site and submit that to Google via your Google Webmasters account. This should get the site indexed fairly quickly.

Try this type into google...   site:www.    the name of your site. That will tell you if it is indexed or not.

Hope this helps,  Garry

i disagree that free listings are a waste of time, if used properly they can be invaluable.
we are listed on as many free listings as we can find and our website reports show that a fair bit of traffic comes from them.

Nice one Ian. I do that as a matter of course but you are dead right. They have to be aware of it to run the analytics. ;)

Gordon,

What's the URL (web address)?
