im building system now 1 question wot you guys think right its to do with pump in stead of me getting a controller could i put some sort of tap down the pipe to control how much water comes out or will that bugger the pump ?

I'd just go for a variable resistor, 10 quid at maplins :)

Its much better to control the pump than the flow of water, With a tap your pump will always be working flat out.....Let the pump control the flow. ;)

does that mean i do have to spend out for a proper pump controller then ?

you will need a controller or the pressure build up will to great as the pump will just keep running
you may bugger the pump or keep blowing the fitting as it builds up

You could do but the pump will be working harder then if you had a controller on it ie if you turn the tap off to stop the flow of water your pump will still be on trying to pump and still be using battery power. For what they cost I would def use a controller and you could still have a tap so when you stop the flow the controller will cut of the power saving battery life and wear on your pump.

im getting a on/off switch wired to the pump you guys think thats gd idea as well ?

I may be wrong, but I doubt it. Things like varistream are a complicated circuit to give you a digital display to show you how much resistance the variable resistor is giving to the pump.
All you need is a resistor than you can wire up (very simple) to fasten to your belt and there you have it, resistor and a way to fit it to your belt for about 25quid if you can diy.
you could also add the on/off switch to your belt gizmo!

No need to if you use a controller, are you having a van mount or troll system

van mount i wana try be as carefull as i can with the water thats all and should i go for manual controller then or digital

Personally I would go for a digital one that's all I've ever used so can't comment on others

some people like the manual as its sufficient for the job others like the digital as it does that little bit more i.e can work without the pressure switch etc, saying that we cant get enough of our own manual one has been very popular.

i ran a system for a year with out a controller and just a tap, when i moved the van, i just disconnected the battery and i never had any problems

these controllers are not just simple resistors i dont think. I think they monitor the load on the pump and compensate for it, thereby ensuring the flow is always the same no matter what the pressure on the pump is.
This is important because if you use a pole at 45 feet it needs more pumping power to keep the flow constant than say at 5ft.
Just my thinking, but i think i am right.

also guys on the ro 4040 waste pipe what valve can i use on the waste pipe ????

If you didn't want to buy a flow controller you could put a flow control valve on the negative (suction) side of the pump. This will allow you to set the flow you want without causing any damage, I believe Ian Giles has done this for a while now. The only thing you won't get is the power saving benefit to the battery that you would get from an electronic flow control.
A needle valve for the waste RO should do the trick.

with both varistreams, the digital and older dial version you do not use the pumps pressure switch,you bypass it.
i have the old dial version, been in my van for over 3 years , no problems, don't think you can get them any more.
