Title: Advice from those how employ?

I have a situation with a employee whos complaining that he has to do all the driving and feels I owe him some hours!
We have a regular contract with a housing company which is about a hour away from us, they come to me and pick the van up at 7am & with the morning traffic they get to site about 8:30.
They then work untill 3.30pm then drive home which takes an hour arriving at 4:30pm,this means with traveling they do a 9half hour day.
They are contracted for 40 hours a week, eight hours a day and they get paid from when they get to site.
because one drives and the other one doesnt he feels hes doing more hours because the other employee is just sitting there!
I feel that there must be some degree of traverling time invovled each day & I dont make them work a whole 8 hours down there due to the distance, am I right CAN YOU ADVICE PLEASE  ???

if they have to go and pick the van up from you, they should be paid when they drive off in the van till they get back if they are on an hourly rate.

Dont you pay the guy who drives more anyway? He's giving you more (or the other gives less).

In the business world you reward that.

i use to work for a guy who workers had to travel to from liverpool to manchester every day abotu 40 miles and a hour of driving,  he use to pay them there 8 - 5 only  they wouldnt turn up till 8.30 and leave at 4.30, so they got 1 hours driving paid every day, but he use to let them keep the van at nights and weekends

yes the guy who drives is on more money , plus when they work further away they dont actuley work an 8 hour day on site only 7. plus they dont use there own veichle to get to the job only to me which is walking distance for them!
How do you guys work the hours for your staff taking travel and working hours into consideration?

The way I see it you have 2 choices.

1. Take the hard line. Tell him to carry on as he is or he has to be at the site at 8.30. You will have the van there waiting for him. I realise this would be a pain in the butt, but he won't go for it any way.

2. Stump up. Personally I pay my guys from when they arrive here, not when they arrive on site. That's everyone not just the drivers.

get trackers on the vans, they may not like it but they aRE ASKING FOR WHAT i SAY IS FAIR, YOU HAVE JUST SAID THEY DRIVE TO YOU, FROM THEM YOU SHOULD BE PAYING THEM.

I know how you feel m8 as I have had this argument, one way is to put them on fixed wage, it works well for them and also for you.

only risk is the weather, but being as using wfp we can work in the rain, it is only snow and really high winds that stop us, this can be made up if they are paid fixed wage so either way you or them do not lose out.

sorry I forgot to say they are both on good  PAYE salary contracts with bonuses each month if the hit certain t/o targets get new customers etc.
This contract can be done in all weathers the only problem its so far away alot of our work is local but this contract is proberly 40% of our turnover, its a mixture of UPVC cleaning, gutter cleaning and window cleaning so there is no problem keeping them busy!

I would add another 30 mins work on there day then pay them the extra they want, you have to cover the cost and 30 mins should do that shouldnt it ? that way everyone is happy.

Dont let them take take take I made this mistake, because when you ask them to do a little extra they want more money and forget you give them half days off, late start early finishes ect. Shame really but thats employing for you.

where did you get it from and what is the on going costs ?

it was from eyetech i think will find a link tomorrow,its a gps logger which means you cant find out where the van is during the day,you download it when the van gets back,no on going costs,we got rid of one guy he was taking the p big time

You need to pay then even when they are driving in the van to site.AS  they are in a company van. You rate per person would differ as one is a driver.Put yourself in the shoes would you send 2 hours in a van driving to your site for nothing. This cost should be costed into the contract.Give some consideration and you might get some back.

i used to be a lift engineer years ago, i used to drive to my bosses house an pick up the van from there and then go to work, when i was travelling i was paid at flat rate, if i worked more than 8 hours a day then it went into overtime, however if i then got in the van to drive back i would go back to flat rate
