Title: SOOT !!
Post by: terrymaloy on May 18, 2010, 07:39:38 pm
Any tips / solutions on removing soot ?
A builder rang me last week after they fitted a loft hatch. They had one dust sheet down, but basically a whole load of soot came down all over the ladies beige 80/20 wool carpet !

It looks like shes made it worse by vacuuming it and really drove it into the pile.

I cleaned it last week using prespray, and HWE and although it was an improvement...its still there  ???

She's complained again and the builders have asked if I'll go back to "have another go"

Hot Ultrapac sprayed on, leave for 15 minutes, extract with hot water.
Possibly repeat but don't forget your final pass with your prefered acid rinse to correct the ph.

It's worked for me in the past but then it all depends on what the builders did and then what the owner did. Don't always accept their first answer as they know that they don't want to seem to have made the problem worse, which she has.

If I'd been called out to it straight away then I would have put some form of absorbant powder down, even talc powder if it comes to it just to absorb the greasy carbon, vacuum that up carefully (no rubbing) and then ultrpac.

Remember they caused the problem and a magician you are not, so make that clear first.

I did a soot job last Friday, used Ultrapac Renovate but others have had success with M-Power/Nemesis

Ultrapak is made for soot but depending on how much some tougher bits may need solvent.

Did exactly same job last month loft hatch conversion in victorian house - builders  coarse twill dust sheet let tons of soot / dust  thru - pre qualified custy that result would never be perfect as too much contamination.

Very thorough vac with Sebo didn make much dif as custy obviously had been canin it with her dyson - Hot ultrapac renovate agitated with 13" rotary using grey xr pad - hot rinse with acid rinse - result in my eyes was 9/10 custy happy enough and paid in full.... Had similar success with JK's Restormate Citrus mixed strong and hot but prefer UPRs "lubrication" for safer agitating..
