hi and thanks in advance
Just p.washed a customers brick drive .
he has just asked if i would resand it for him and he is thinking of getting it sealed
so do i seal the brick and then sand , or does it matter
when you re-sand do you add weed killer or leave that for another time.
once again thanks in advance

the whole idea of sealing the surface and joints is too harden the sand to stop weeds and grass growing. i dont see much point in sealing the blocks first then sanding the joints, it defeats the object and very costly.
-
You are better putting weedkiller down at least a week before you clean,if not after cleaning but before sanding. You seal after sanding to harden the joints but make sure you have had a good period of sunny weather and all the damp is out or you will have a headache.I sealed one last year, gave it a quick first coat of sealer, then sanded it as the sand flew across the smooth surface and down the joints,i then gave it another 2 coats of sealer. If i were you i would not start sealing till we hit the summer and the ground is totally dried out or you will be back in a month trying to get the bloom out.Good luck,Dan

Just a thought ,
Please tell me i would be doing the wrong thing if i tried .or visa versa
If you mixed salt with the sand , would this inhibit some weed growth, or would the salt mark the paving/block work ?

Thanks
I had been looking at an acyrilic sealer for the bricks.
What is used for sealing the sand
Thanks again

you use the same sealer for both. you sand the joints neatly and then use a roller or sprayer to apply the sealer. its soaks into the sand and makes the sand go hard to stop weeds. i would be very carefull doing it tho as you can get comebacks.

Geoff have never tried it or even thought about it!! :)
How would you mix the salt and sand?
Doesnt salt desolve when it gets wet so that would mean that if you mixed half and half you would loose half the joint filler when it rains? ???
-
i have been told wash then sand about 1-2 days later
-
The salt would kill any snails as they cross the drive ;D
That is until it is dissolved after the first rainfall ::)

if you dont what you are doing with sealing then be careful, it can come back to haunt you.Im in my second year doing this and Im still undecided whether to do sealing or not.
Theres the weather to consider and then theres the efflorescence although this should not be a problem with a drive thats been down a month
-
is efflorescence what comes off new brick. (this drive has been down about 10 yr)
-
yeah its the salts coming out of the bricks
-
I understand that you can make good money sealing drives however you have to get it right first time i personally will not seal as the conditions have to be right and it really is too much hassle.

All depends on weather.baking hot you can sand next day.i`ve waited 2 weeks to sand jobs.it has to be bone dry so sand falls to bottom of block.
-
Is there anything to remove efflorescence from brick
-
one of this lances with flame on end like guys on roads use be ideal fro drying out
-
we mix salt with the sand and it seems to keep the weeds off a lot better.
-
If you have done a very good job and removed all weeds while washing with yout Turbo Nozzle all you have to do is explain to the customer that weeds will re-appear and they must be dealt with right away either by pulling out or using a spot weedkiller. :D

Thanks gary,
thats all i wanted to know , better late than never :)

hi there ive been sealing drives for 7 years now i use resiblock sealer the best on the market ,to seal the blocks need to be bone dry , i allow 3 good days for this , i dont put the kiln dried sand in the joints till the day of the sealing making sure no sand is left on top this normally requires a blower , also make sure there is no chance of rain in the next 12 hrs after sealing. the same process would apply to the cheaper sealants ....hope this helps
-
when re-sanding a yard do u need a vibrating plate, or will just brushing it on do the job?
-
well? anyone?
-
Just a broom - the drive is compacted when the blocks are laid
-
it does stop the weeds growing back quicker.if you have not got a license you should not be using weedkiller.
