Title: What would you have done
Post by: Neil Grainger on May 07, 2010, 10:06:33 am
First Job for a well known hotel chain and all fell apart.

Agreed to start at 10:30pm cleaning 10 sofa's in Bar, was told that it closes at 11 so 10:30 set up would be fine, 11 o'clock comes and goes and people still partying in Bar. Was told by duty manager that i could not start until they finnish. I asked when will that be, he said sometimes they dont finnish until 2or 3 in the morning. I advised them that i wont wait that long and packed up and went home.

Was I wrong?

Theres more then a very strong chance you wont get the £60 an hour for waiting as Derek suggested SO I think you were right in packing in.

who did you agree with to start at 10.30 ? was it someone  with more authority than the  Duty manager?

If I had travelled to do the job I would have pushed to get the bar clear, if it was local i might have just gone home

Was this a contract and if so was it written down? You would have every right to charge if they have broken their contract, it really naffs me off when other people think our time is not as valuable as their's.

Large hotel chain or not, you had a deal.

We clean for several hotels and the best night for anything in the bar or lounges is always a Sunday night.
We have turned up at 11:15 and the bar has been empty and another time it could be still busy, it is pot luck.
The latest we have had people still drinking is 3:30 in the morning.
We eventually cleaned around them and they got the message.
A guest staying at a hotel will be served for as long as they want to drink.
If you want to do this sort of work you have to be flexible but the hotel staff must also respect the fact that you have a job to do.

Neil,

The best thing to do is to set up and turn the porty on, with the exhaust pointing towards them, ( if you tm take one along ) and if someone says something, tell them you have to WARM the machine up. Works every time ;D

Daryl

i had a contract for a well known health club type business, i would be booked by the facility manager for a late night clean and when i arrived with a helper i was often turned away because they had an 'important' guest in. it happend once too often and i told them to get someone else to do their cleaning. it's not just that nights work that goes missing it's the fact that i would leave the next morning free as i thought i would be up until 4 or 5 in the morning. the money was good for the work i did but i don't regret for a minute telling them to shove it,

Hi Guys

Do we need these sort of customers, in the short term maybe because of cash flow but in the longer term no.

I would have done the same as you and would not go back.

Cheers

Doug

All depends on how much you want the work, thats the brutal truth :( it it were me i would have waited, but maybe when things pick up i would do differently no right or wrong here if you have the wolves at the door, you will put up with pretty much anything :'(

Not that the wolves are at "my" door but i have been in dire straits in the past so i know what its like, look at it from his perspective he throws the paying customers out of the bar so you can clean ???
