After wfp having been around for so long you would think somebody would have made a electric motor, geared, that you can just bolt on the metal hosereels we all use. You ofcourse have the professional hosereels but they are practically unaffordable for the majority of people.
Surely this is a gap in the market where a smart company could place a product to fill it? (if that makes any sense)
It shouldn't be too hard? Or.....

I had one set up in my workshop that worked very well, but I didn't bother mass producing them as there didn't seem to be much interest. As soon as someone does it though, and gets them on the market then everyone will be selling them. Suppose everyone is waiting on someone else to do it first, so as they will have something to copy.

Hmm, yea I was kind of fearing that really. It would make things ever easier. :)
ps. I've always wondered what mechanism would be used to prevent damage to for instance the motor in case the hose gets tangled around something.

I seem to remember that there was someone on here a couple of years ago who used an electric drill to do this.

drill motor with a adjustable torque wrench attached to the end for in case of tangles.
a professional electronic wheel brace from a garage would be perfect.
how could you attach it to the hose reel?

I don't think who ever brings one out that it will ever be that cheap, unless the demand is high and it can be mass produced easily.
what you have to realise is the work that would have to go into designing one for our needs, the gearing has to be right and without a slipping clutch the motor wouldn't last long the amount of times our hoses get trapped.
So you see its not just a case of having an electric motor fitted to a battery and to be honest I can't see a battery drill lasting that long even with good torque because the motor or gears Just aren't built for the Job, most battery drills have plastic gears unless you go for the real top of the range ones but even some top end ones like Makita, Bosh and DeWalt have plasic gearing built into their lower spec models.
So don't hold your breath waiting for a cheap model until someone mass produces it.

just take on a youngster and get him to do it ;) problem solved
he reels in while you collect the money and post slips

i spent £1500 tinkering with the idea various motors and clutchs and all a pain in the arse develoment costs are unvelievable.
i now use an 18v makita drill set on its low setting with a 22mm deep reach socket now, it will wind up 100m in 20 secs
cheapest and best option imo

Why do people need to have a self winding hose reel?
It isn't hard to reel in your hose.
how lazy do people need to get? lol
We use WFP and no longer run up and down the ladders!
next we'll have people wanting a contraption to turn on and it cleans all the windows itself and all you need to do is sit back and watch it work!

No offense to anyone who uses one, but that's the one thing I don't want to be messing about with, a handheld or jimmy rigged drill. I was around when that topic surfaced, it works but don't want it.
One guy posted a video of it, but had a blanket over it because he was stil working on it, and didn't want to give it away. Another guy said he was working together with an engineer to deliver a simple bolt on solution, nothing heard again of.

Why do I need a carbon fibre pole? Why does it need to be as light as can be? Why do we optimize our kit, and work? Because it makes work easier. If you reel in 60m per job on average, and do 15 jobs, then you reel in almost 2 kilometer per day, that's 657 kilometer a year, from London to Paris and back! And that's just a normal residential day.
Lazy? No, work smarter, not harder.
Our bodies wear, the harder work we do, the quicker the joints/muscles go, a simple forum search will come up with hundreds of people who have problems with their body of the work we do. I don't want to get worse then I already am, and that's at 26!

What wear and tear would winding a hose reel in do?
its like weight training, the more weights you use the more your muscles build up and get use to it.
on average it takes me seconds to wind in my hose.
Winding a hose reel in won't damage your neck or shoulders like glass fibre poles do.
CF poles aren't just used because they are lighter, I find that they are stronger, and more rigid thus being able to put more pressure onto the glass to aid with the scrubbing.
your 26, you should be fit as a fiddle.
I'm 8 years older than you and I haven't noticed any problems with winding my hose in.
the only problem I encountered since changing over to WFP was my neck.
Since then I stand further back from the building so I am not tilting my head back as much.

Ever heard of RSI. It is not the muscles but the joints and tendons that get strained.
I have a high quaility van mounted reel but years of winding in the hose daily does have an effect.

i dont gob off unless ive tried all the methods available i suggest the doubters on here spouting they know better to try it first
it will cost less than £20 to do it assuming you have a drill you need a deep reach 22mm socket and a socket driver available from halfords or screwfix
why wouldn't you want to make your life easier and quicker???? ??? ???
