Title: Moved to fan Jets this week...
Post by: Smudger on May 01, 2010, 09:29:56 pm
Okay, this is just my personal thinking experience on going from pencil jets to fan jets....

Firstly they finally arrived, as out of stock - fitting was easy and i put them into my dual trim super lite.

practiced on my house to see what i had let myself into...     well you certianly know your cleaning with fan jets, the noise on the window really is loud !

Got good results so bit the bullet and did a whole day - standard cleans ( no new ones )  - WOW! left flow on same rate as i use for pencil's  and after the second house of the day i was flying - rinsing was sooooo   quick and easy. even one of my fav. regulars commented on how the water sound to be really hitting the glass and washing the frames clean.

by the end of the day i had used less water than normal ( approx 50 ltrs )  and finished over 40 minutes earlier than normal  :o

The next day was all new cleans and again the fans removed all the built up grime mould and moss easily, however i did have the following - after rinse i noticed that there was some areas of 'grit' left behind - i have had this with pencil's but seemed worse than normal on 2 of these first cleans - so had to re do several windows again.

this maybe down to my technique or brush,  as it's best to keep the brush on the glass with fan jets should i change to a flocked brush head that holds the dirt better ??

So with more practise and maybe a different brush head the fan jets are proving ( so far ) to be a good move.

and thanks goes to Peter fogwill for advise on another thread about fan jets.

No Darran you definitely don't want a flocked brush head that holds the dirt better.  You want a nice loosely compact bristle brush so the dirt can work its way down through the bristles.

I am glad I could be a help, and it is good to know someone was listening.  There seems to be a new convert every time there is a big long topic on the jet debate. Problem is as soon as it is forgotten about someone else comes along and starts it again.  They may think people are fobbing them off by telling them to do a search, but that is actually the best thing they can do, as there is a lot of good information out there about jets, and what ones are best.

And although it is good to help, usually people involved in these long posts can't be bothered going over the whole thing again.

Why are fan jets and 1mm pencil jets so unpopular with suppliers?

I might try some fans one day but if they are so good why are the leading manufacturers not fitting them as standard or even giving you a choice when ordering a new brush.

will the added force of the fan jets not risk inner leakage on some older windows?

No more so than pencil jets will

I agree with you smudger and I'd like to thank Peter too - it was his trolley system that got me into wfp five years ago and he advocated fanjets then in his salmon brushes.

I tried pencil with my fishing pole for a couple of years and then went back to fan just over a year ago.

When I got my last SLX I specified fan again but it came with a flocked black brush which Alex kindly exchanged for a white dual trim.

The best combination for me is white superlite dual trim (the black flocked drags more on the glass) with fanjets.

Have a tap on your belt so you can turn down the flow to pencil if you want to lightly direct the flow into the corner of the glass for rinsing if you are at an angle.

And I too use less water and do more work. My 400L rarely runs out these days.

I think I may get some fan jets next, I really liked them when I used them before, but found that they got clogged up very easily!!

How many suppliers do you know that clean windows? Even some suppliers that do clean windows were supplied with brushes from the main companies at the time, and copied what was available. When they started to sell WFP equipment they just copied what was on the go at the time, and that was pencil jets.

I was lucky in the fact that when I started to sell WFP equipment I started from scratch.  I didn't buy a system from someone and copy what they had. I sourced all the equipment and modified it to suit my needs.  It took a while trying lots of different ways until I found things, or combinations of things, that worked.

Going back why were pencil jets so popular at the time? Well because they were cheaper to produce, less labour involved.  I have even seen pencil jets made with a hole drilled in a self tapping screw, and you can't get any cheaper than that.  People spend thousands of pounds on a WFP system and the most important part is the brush, and they are feeding the water trough a self tapping screw. You can't blame the window cleaner, they just think this is how it's done.

I remember when my Autobrush first came out, some suppliers got in touch saying it was a wonderful idea and could they supply them as well.  Once they found out I had applied for a Patent on it, and that because of the price of the valves and the work involved at the time making up a brush they soon changed their minds. They were on the forums shortly afterwords saying how the Autobrush wasn't such a good idea after all, and trying to put people off that way of working.

As long as suppliers keep supplying certain things, then people will keep using them.

If it works on high stuff, it should work on low stuff.

Reminds me of years ago when the WFP companies were after the big cleaning companies, and had no interest in the smaller window cleaning businesses.  They were actually promoting WFP for commercial cleaning only, and saying it wasn't suitable for domestic window cleaning.  How on earth could they make that out? How did the WFP know if it was cleaning a commercial window or a domestic window?

So any particular jet? I see wcw do a couple of different angles which angle would be most suitable or in fact which jet would you recommend for your normal sized brush?

I seen a fan jet on their site on the second page but I honestly can't comment on them, as I have never used or seen anyone using them.  I don't know what you mean by which angle as I never seen any angled jets.  For all I know some people who may be saying that they don't like fan jets, could be using jets that are no good, or even positioned in the brush wrong.  The positioning and the position of the bristles are very important, as is the density of the bristles.

I have found that the jets work best nearer the top of the brush, just under the top row of bristles.  Obviously the bristle line has to be removed along the whole line of the spray, leaving one bristle in either end.  If the bristles are still in place the fan won't work, and BTW I have seen fan sprays fitted in the middle of the brush with the bristles in the way.

I am away back to my own forum, it is much easier over there. I was thinking I am not going to talk about brushes for a while, and here I am again :'(

Dave - i'm using the 40 deg ( blue ) this covers the length of the brush head ( superlite ) i think you would find the 60 deg ( green ) are more useful for larger brushes - ie.   16 inch long.

Peter - the angle referred to is the arc of spray produced by these fan jets - not an angle as in seated into the brush etc..

Thanks for that Darran, you learn something new every day.  Do they spray in quite a straight line from left to right?

Mines are £1.95 each plus VAT.  You would need an 8mm hole to put them in though.

Peter, how come your website is not working?  ???

groundhog did you try and get on my site through my profile?  If so it looks like the link has been tampered with, it has been changed.  Now I was contacted and told my signature link had been taken away but not this one.  I agreed on the fact that it had to be taken away if that was now forum policy, but did think of it as having something taken from me, and did say to Jason that I though I should have at least the chance to do it myself.  I am not expecting something for nothing, and I don't want something that belongs to me taken away either.  These links to my website over the last 7 years were all part and parcel, of the posts I was contributing to the forum at the time, and now they are all wiped out.  This forum is only what it is today because of all the posts it's members have contributed over the last 7 years, and I happened to be one of the people contributing in that time.

Now the link on my profile is gone. Surely it would be in the members best interest to look and see who suppliers are, and what they do?

I never had any misleading or false information on my profile.  In fact there was at least two members today who were looking for certain information that has been taken away.

Looks like 7 years of using this forum could be coming to an end for me, next thing I know all my posts will be edited, well more than they have been edited already by removing part of my signature.

Money is being made out of the generosity of others.  Everyone likes to make money, and no one can blame anyone who wants to make more, but making out that things are being changed for the good of the members, is just not true.

Yes Peter I tried to get onto your site through the link on your profile. I wanted to have a look on your site to see if you were still selling your clampless poles etc.

groundhog, I would have to pay cleanitup for you to be able to do that, they are protecting your interest though.  You see if I pay them it means I am a reputable supplier, and then they would give the go ahead for you to visit my website.  Can't let you decide for yourself, you may make a big mistake.
