Moss and algae protection ?
« on: January 23, 2014, 02:49:22 pm »
Hi..

Just wondering if anyone can recommend a product, a moss and algae preventative that can be sprayed onto the facade of a building that would also have a long life span..maybe 5yrs ?

Thanks Chris,

I use Sodium Hypochlorite for softwashing ...spray on, a 10 min dwell time and a quick rinse and the job is done.
Im just looking for a decent preventative coating..

There isn't one ...believe me I have looked (and tried many samples)! You can slow stone down to a certain extent just by making it "waterproof"...but it all goes green sooner or later. ;D

Hi Peter, We have a new technology which will prevent the growth of moss and algae on all hard exterior surfaces, once applied to a clean dry vertical surface it will keep moss and algae at bay for 10 years, We have other new projects which we are prioritizing on so dont have the time to pursue this one at the moment, if you are interested and have the time to carry out some tests send me an email and i will send you on some samples.       Regards  Tadgh

I spoke to him about it ..but he had misplaced the only samples he had. Due to the interest he was going to obtain some more for us to try....
Sounds an interesting product. Tadgh himself seems pretty clued up too
I wonder if you knows how to apply impregnating sealers ;D

not being funny but samples are pointless as I havent got 10 yrs to wait  :) just interested in paper work data sht etc plus manufacturers guarantee if there is one ? as u know most offer no guarantee against 're-growth'.

Photocatalytic coatings have been around for years. The new generation ones "might" be pretty good by now.

Hi Peter,

The moss and algae is forming because moisture is being retained in the substrate. This problem can be reduced massively by application of a quality impregnating sealer.  The sealer will simply help keep the substrate dry, making it harder for moss and algae to form.  This type of sealer Also the substrate remains 'breathable' so any retained moisture can disperse.

The sealers our contractors use have been applied for 10+ years and have been subjected to advance weather testing. They have BBA and CE approval and comply to be latest REACH (use of safe chemicals) standards.

The results from the enhanced weather testing show that a lifespan of minimum 10 years on vertical surfaces can be expected.

Restore ALGEX algaecide costs way less at £12 than AlgoClear® which now seems a ripoff at £42 for 5tlrs and is even cheaper than Smart Seal Moss Clear. Wonder why that is then chaps?

Maybe the suppliers could also chip in as would be interested to find out how they justify their pricing.
