Christmas Scrooges 2010
« on: December 17, 2010, 11:54:45 am »
I clean a Doctors house in a village not too far away. The man of the house is a GP his wife is a GP and his eldest lad who lives at home still is a GP. They all work in their own practice. They have gardeners, cleaners, working there on a regular basis, they have tradesmen who come and go doing various jobs and they have me who cleans the windows.
Well i went there yesterday to do the windows on a cold wet & snowy day and when i finished the Head Doctor of the house gave me a tip a full blooded nice shiny 50p. Couldn't believe it  :o in fact i'd rather he had given me nothing.
Now i know people say they don't have to give me aything and not to expect anything but 50p from a household that probably has £300,000plus going into the coffers beggers belief.
now the opposite i did a small 2 up 2 down house yesterday for £8 and the owner who basically looks like she got a pot to pee in gave me a £5 tip and a couple of cans of Fosters ;D
So Dr you have won  my Christmas Scrooge 2010 award hands down

Threads like these really make me smile.

Some of us really believe that we have the right to expect extra from our the customers, when we are simply servants!

They don't have to give us any extra, no matter how wealthy we may perceive them to be. Unless we have got them to sign an agreement that they have to pay extra just because it is 'christmas', If I were you I would be grateful for whatever extra you do get, as well as being grateful for the privilege you have to work for them.

50p is 50p. If it is not good enough for you to accept, then why not take that off the next clean, now you have been given it.  ;D

I've had about £150 so far which helps. But I do have very wealthy custies that wouldn't give you the snot from their nose. Yet on the other hand the more humble ones give me fivers and tenners. ;D

i find the wealthier custies usually dont tip at xmas but are( mostly!) better payers! ;D ;D ;D

im just interested in getting the money for the window cleaning but im always owed a fair whack at anyone time.

nobody has a god given right to a tip at xmas but its nice that some people do and that they appreciate my service.

you ve got the wrong attitude IMO mate!!!is the job underpriced by any chance?? ;D ;D

All tips are gratefully received.  I do wish they wouldn't give me wine though.  As an ex drunk who hasn't had a drink in a very long time, I would much rather have money or chocolates  ;D .  But I smile and say thank you and give the bottles to friends.

Blooming heck like i said they don't have to give me anything and i know people in other walks of life never get tipped. But what i can't get my head round is why give me 50p ? why not just give me nothing ? if he did then i'd have just shrugged my shoulders and thought to myself "tight git" but to give me 50p i reckon he is a much much tighter git than giving me nothing
BTW back in October i knocked down a House Martins nest high up in the eves with my pole never charged him for it and last month he was moving a garden statue across his grass me and my lad gave him a hand again no extra charge .....
PS Dazmond the house isn't under charged it's a fair price imho

I don't think anybody has said they expect a tip.Just an observation that seemingly richer people don't tip and people less well off do.Generally speaking obviously.I would have to agree.I've had much more tips so far from people in the £5-£10 bracket than larger houses £20+.In fact, thinking about it I haven't had one tip so far from a house I charge more than a score for.Personally speaking I would find an extra 50p a bit insulting. If it was £9.50 and he said keep the change from a tenner thats one thing but producing a 50 pence piece like you're a bob a job lad is different.Run along and buy some sweeties you little scamp...

Keeping tabs on all my tips so I can send them a little thank you in the new year. (obviously thanking those that pay me on the day anyhow).

It's very strange how it varies from area to area. I had one day last Friday where I picked up £101 in tips alone spread over 27 jobs. (some never tipped, best one £20). Then had very little this week apart  from a couple of nice ones added onto the cheque in the post.

It does tend to be the less affluent areas that feel they should give the loyal window cleaner a little bonus for Xmas though

I got a fiver today for not doing the windows  :o My hose had froze up, so i knocked on a house that needs door opening to access the back, and explained that hose had froze so could just do downstairs. She said do not worry about it leave it until next time as they are not that bad. So I went and put stuff away as i had done next door first, she came running out and said here you go have a drink for xmas, I said do not be daft (as i had not done her windows) she said no, have it, I appreciate you coming to do them.

If a doctor only gives you a 50p tip, it could be a bad sign. He might know more than you think.

yep, 50p is a little light,

However, it is the thought that counts,  Tips are given as a token of appreciation for good work, at least you can rest knowing he is happy with your service and that you are not getting binned in the new year.  Knowing that is the the best tip me.... So 50p does have value, just depends how you look at it.

Did get a decent bottle of whisky in the week in a presentation box with glasses, I was gob smacked!

Should be tipped every time really, I have my car cleaned every week 12.00 always give 15.00, and the guy that delivers my Indian always gets a tip, aswell as the lady that cuts my hair monthly gets a tip, surly window cleaners should fall in same category , I remember the good old days of tips. Now we only undertake commercial we have to treat them, spent 500.00 at the wine merchants this year :( !
