thinking of starting up a wc round
« on: June 03, 2006, 11:13:32 am »
Hi all :)
I hate my job and have been thinking of starting a window cleaning round but know nothing about it.
What advice can you give me?
What equipment do I need?
How much should I charge?
any advice would be much appreciated
Thanks

Hey
The first thing to do is see if anyone in your area will take you out for as long as they can.
This will give you a taster.
I did two weeks before i made up my mind.
Without putting you off there is no holiday pay  or sick pay.
The winters are cold and it can be lonely.
If you are like myself i like working on my own though.
Other than that it is very satisfying.
You get to meet some great people.
From the outset drop moaners complainers bad payers.
You do not want to work for nothing.
Treat it as a buisness do daily accounts declare everything.
The list is endless.

I don't expect it to be easy but I see it as a business that there is a demand for and that has fairly low start up costs.
Believe me,my current job is a nightmare so I am not afraid of hard work.I just want to be in control of my own life.
I am in Newquay,Cornwall by the way.

Hi

I would go for it, I have setup and run several small businesses in the last few years ( currently property maintenance inc end of tenancy cleans) and have found it very easy to get work. Make sure you don't start off under charging as I have made this mistake in the past and it is difficult to push prices up. If you find you don't enjoy window cleaning you can always sell the round and do something else. Th start up costs are very low for a business with good earning potential but you will have to work hard from the start to get business and make sure all health and safety issues and paperwork from the inland revenue is kept on top of.

Hey
i did not want to put you off just putting it as it is.
It is one of those jobs you hate or love.
Personally i love it.
Collecting can be a chore but has to be done.
If you stick at it the rewards are there for the tacking.

you confuse me!
one post you tell me not to give up my job then you say it was the best move you ever made! :)

anyway,I had a really good day with Dave,he was very helpful and gave me loads of good advice. Thanks Dave.
My shoulders are killing me from having a go with the pole and I only used it for about five minutes!
Also,think I got a touch of sunstroke.
It hasn't put me off though and I really want to give it a go.Getting some leaflets done and will be out canvassing next week.Just hope I can find the work.
