Method and product for oiling wood floor
« on: September 19, 2012, 01:56:49 pm »
Got a (domestic) customer who wants there wood floor oiling again. It has not been done for at least 5 years and was oiled with a product from a company call Trip Trap who are Danish (according to the bottle). What's the best method for oiling with a  (rotary)machine.
I have got to do about 16 square meters in living room and 20 in the kitchen. Could someone recommend a product to use and a method. Quite a few scratches and scuff marks - would a rub over with wire wool help?

Thanks

There are a couple of ways depending on how dry the floor is.
A quick run over with a Scrad pad to close up the surface a little and very lightly resurface followed by oiling.

The oil can be applied by a double bladed trowel, roller or by using a buffing machine.

You want to apply the oil to saturation point and buff off the excess.

One method we like is to get a good quality herringbone floor cloth.
Place it on the floor and a floor pad on top.
Take out the centre of the pad and fill it with oil.
Fold over the corners then put your machine and drive board on top and buff it out over the floor.
Often it is necessary to give the floor another buff the day after as some oil can leach back out. Especially if there has been a bit of traffic. Another floor cloth or a red pad can be used for this.

Our preference is to use Osmo hardwax oils. Others are available.

Forgot to say use a good wood floor cleaner specifically for oiled floors and allow to dry out prior to application.

Generic floor cleaners are designed to remove oil based soil so will have a negative effect on the floor.

Could I use an oreck orbitor to apply oil with a white pad using the above method? and I take it Osmo do a suitable wood floor cleaner.
