Accident.

This isn’t me, its from a FB group. Falling off a ladder isnt about a bruised arse and having to walk it off for half an hour.

The unfortunate thing with ladders as well, you dont have to fall from a great height to have a nasty accident.

A break like that often results in complications later. I had 6 months off work when I broke my ankle and a further 15 months off when I needed follow up surgery six years later. Thanks to WFP I can still do the job.
We have a choice! We can do one or the other, the opposite, both, or neither depending on which way the wind is blowing.

These things happen, but I wouldn't get too hung up about it. Do you think a roofer would change his job because of this? IMO , these things happen because people are rushing and not being careful climbing ladders.

You can have all the safety measures in the world and risk assessments and be careful with what you do but an accident can always happen sadly. Poor lad has took a sore one.

I'm guessing he wasn't incompetent after 37 years. Probably complacency.

When I think about the risks I used to take, seriously, WTF was I thinking?

Have to admit there where times i got a bit complacent when using ladders or running around on roofs, i bet we all have at some point before wfp. When you go up and down them 100's a time a week you naturally do.
Hope that guy recovers well certainly a wake up call and proof it can happen to anyone no matter how long you've been going.

The main reason for falls from height, is working at height.

When using a ladder. 1st and foremost the job is making sure you are being careful.

I have to admit being 37 now falling off a ladder would probably finish my window cleaning days for good. I only use it for access to flat roofs now but even then it's something that makes me shudder of the thought.

I am 100% trad, 55 year of age and in the game 20 years now.

I've taken a handful of tumbles, every one of which has been down to user error. Fortunately not once have I been hurt, but I realize it could have been very different.

These days I take great care to ensure the ladders aren't going to slip before climbing them.

I believe accidents with ladders are caused by simply lacking due care and attention to the potential dangers of using them, beit by complacency or incompetence, or being insufficiently confident using them. That said, the ladders have to be fit for purpose in the first place.

I would say that the more you use them, the more complacent you can become, but to balance this out the less you use them, the more incompetent you can become, or you could become less confident using them.

Bottom line is, if you must use ladders, make sure you and they are up to the job.

No it's not. It's falling.

It's not the fall, it's the sudden stop after the fall.
