A 50% deposit is always necessary to eliminate all the non serious enquiries.  It will save you a hell of a headache but taking non refundable deposits to secure the booking.

I can see that be helpful on large jobs worth a few grand but a few hundred quid or less it's not worth it surely?

It's worth it on every job mate unless you seriously know them and they are not messers!  I have just had a guy in France cancel on me!!!  I agreed the job last month with him for Monday 12th December and told him I need a deposit to make it a firm booking, he said and I quote:

" I will definitely, definitely, definitely  be going ahead as I have searched France for someone like you"

I responded with a contract and said sign this and send me the deposit then and I will make it a firm booking!  He said:

"No problem!  The deposit is on it's way"

I e mailed him again today a month later and said "No Deposit Yet"

Just had an e mail saying he has put it on hold for now!!!

Good job I didn't book the ferries and flights wasn't it ::)roll ::)roll ::)roll

No it isn't , that job was only just over a £1k.  Lose two  or three jobs worth £100's and it is suddenly a £1k isn't it?  You can fight this all you want Smurf I think you haven't got the courage of your convictions!  Don't be scared to ask for a deposit!   I just call it a deposit for the booking, fuel and MOS costs end of.  If they don't want to pay it they are not serious in my opinion and I get on with something else period!

Your decision not mine bud, I do it on every job ;D  If you don't feel comfortable just take 25 or 33% deposit?  I promise you, if you get a deposit, your cancellations will stop.  While your at it stop trying to stick me on a pedestal regarding work,  I am a normal guy I do small local jobs as well as bigger domestic and commmercial!  I even shop in Lidl cos I luv the apple turnovers and their cheese rolls ;D
