I thought bus lanes were open to all?! They are up here anyway

I've no idea as to the extent of the bus lane relaxations, but here in Liverpool they are all open to all on a temporary basis and have been for a while. Whats bizzare is that now that they are open to all no one drives in them. When they where operative coppers where there ticketing people for driving in them  ;D
Just like Daves 20mph signs, "bus lanes inoperative, now open to all traffic", no one takes any notice.

Not that far away  ;D cycle down to Wilton and back a few times. Used to be a WI cake stop opposite the catholic church in the village hall. Nice route the Wyle Valley. Nice mountain bike route over the top too.

Salisbury a bit rough though.

20mph zones are a joke. You could be banned from driving for 'speeding' without having gone over 25mph.

25mph is very slow. I think all speed limits should be removed but, if you are caught driving like a dikhead you should have all driving rights removed until such a time as you can prove to the magistrates that you are in fact not a dikhead and that giving driving privileges back to you will not result in the return of your dikheadedness.

20 mph limits here in Brighton
I don't know of anyone who has been fined yet. Even the buses seem unable to keep to it.
The general opinion seems to be its unenforceable, on a plus side though it is rare now that anybody travels above 30 mph in the town center.

The only issue i have with low speed limits, be they 20 or 30mph, is where it is not clear what the limit is. If it is clear, abide by it and there will be no problems. Given that we rely on our licenses to do our job, it is our own responsibility to make sure we are not speeding. As a bus driver, doing late runs into Aberdeen, i would often use the cruise control on the bus to maintain the 30mph, otherwise it is remarkably easy to let your speed creep up without realizing.

With regards to bus lanes, i cant speak for anywhere else, but in Aberdeen, they are for bus and taxi use only during rush hour in the morning and afternoon (the times are clearly marked), otherwise, anyone can use them.

I don't have any problems with 20 MPH limits near schools at certain times of day or other vulnerable areas at appropriate times.  The problem being that it's 20MPH outside a school at 5AM.  For laws to be abided by they do need to appear to be reasonable.

Improving road safety is not the only rationale for the 20MPH zones we are all aware of the significant increased risk of serious injury associated with higher speed particularly with the weight of most modern cars.

There is also a thinking that reducing speed in built up areas reduces CO2 emissions.

Oh well thank god for that then.  If it's reducing CO2 emissions then you can justify anything.

From now on we should all drive at 20mph even on motorways "to save the planet".  In spite of the fact that the UK accounts for less than 2% of the worlds emissions and China and India are building new coal-fired power stations at the rate of one every week.

Treehuggers, loony lefties  and bleeding heart liberals will be the death of british competitveness IMO
