Any Wordpress masters in here??  ;D

I'm looking at migrating my site onto Wordpress and just wondering what the best way to go about it is...

I can install it through my hosts Cpanel or direct from WP onto my PC - What's better?
What are the basic plugins I need or are there any good templates anyone could recommend and where to find those?

These are a couple of Wordpress Sites I have done for others recently.

You only really get the benefit of using WP if you add lots of new content regularly otherwise it is a longer way round of setting up a site in my opinion.

Migrate from what, html (I do not know what type your site is)?

Free Plug-ins.

Google XML Sitemaps (automatically builds then rebuilds your sitemap, everytime you add a post or page).

W3 Total Cache (Vital. It cuts the page load down to half. I got a site from 11 seconds down to 4 using this).

All in One SEO Pack or Yoast (but don't go too mad on the SEO).

Akismet (anti-spam).

Redirection. Does your 301s, 404s etc.

I've got a standard html site now using weebly

I want to start another one and most of the great l sites I've seen are done on wordpress.
I've looked into Joomla and Drupal, actually just not sure what direction to take.

Its going to be a 100 pages plus in size so needs to be CSS

Weeebly is a web 2.0 property so I'm not sure if you can get in to the server or get at the style sheets. Sorry.

I just typed in "migrate weebly to wordpress" to Google and there are some articles there that may be of help.

I'd add CBnet ping optimizer to that list, and a page/post Editor, I use Deans FCKeditor.
Akismiet comes pre loaded now.

Good one Gary. I've got TinyMCE Advanced

Warren,

Wordpress "pings" each time you edit it. If you are not careful, you can look like a spammer, just by rewriting an article. CBNet ping optimizer regulates this, so it's another must have plugin.

Some good posts.

There are some paid themes which are optimised for local SEO and have easy customisation within the WP front end.

In the last year or so a lot of the well known themes have many of the key plugins.
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

I just cant get on with Wordpress, I find it really nippy trying to get the layout right.
I`v been using Adobe Muse for about a year now, luv it, so easy once you understand how it works. No idea how it compares to WP SEO wise.

I think it cost me 12 quid a month and you can host it wherever you want.

If you are a bit anal it's not for you. The trade off is speed, optimisation (on half decent themes) and something the average Joe can do with a bit of time and grey matter. But I know what you mean Rob.

Wordpress is free, open source software: http://wordpress.org/
It originated as free blogging software, as an add-on to existing websites.
It's developed way beyond a simple blog now.

These days lots of small to medium sized websites are based on wordpress, and many professional org's use it.

As a hobby project, if you have the time to learn how to drive it, it's worthwhile.

Though I don't use it.
