So I thought I would work today
« on: August 26, 2019, 10:02:03 am »
Never worked a bank holiday before but going away next week so decided it would be a good idea to get some work today.

Well, I've never felt so awkward in my life  ;D

Everyone is in bed lol. Not seen anyone about, loads of cars on drives, curtains shut and windows open.

I've had two locked gates that I couldn't get in and had someone told me he didn't really appreciate me cleaning his windows at 9 o clock on a bank holiday as just work him up.

Now I know why I have never worked them and I won't be doing it again in a hurry

I started at 8 :15 and have decided to call it a day it's not for me this bank holiday lark.

Yer customers are a weird lot south of the border.

We work every bank/public holiday and have never had any problems.

Most folk in jobs seem to work bank holidays these days, so why not us?

When i was employed, i would get either time n half or double pay for working bank holidays. Lol so one major difference.
The second, is the advantage of being a self employed as a sole trader, being able to choose to work these days or not.  Mostly I for one, would prefer spending such a great sunny day as today, with my family rather than working. Unfortunately this time round, i need to work a hand ful of hours

8.15 on a bank holiday and just turning up ☹️ No wonder you weren’t well received.

Did a quick £45 while the wife was getting up and ready.

Usually do a bit on a bank holiday, more to get me moving than anything else.

I’m a man of routine, feel sluggish when not up and working!

My office view today , rarely do a BH but nobody in bed here .
What did my head in was I went to open the back doors and the mechanism cable snapped, took me half an hour to strip the locks out and get it open  :'(

I'm so lazy I'm getting tired of it !

I'd start no earlier than 10 am unless prearranged.

Don't work bank holidays as a rule.
It's a game of three halves!

Yeh 10am would have been a better time to start.

However it seems a bit pointless starting at that time as you've wasted half the day so best policy is to just to not work them I think.

Don't mind doing commercial on a Bank Holiday when its convenient for me, I worked a few hours this morning.

I have done half a dozen houses before.....Once....and all pre-arranged.  Gave them the option as I was running out of time before a holiday and they all said yes.  But given the choice I'd have happily missed them until the next clean.

Mrs window cleaner was working this morning (she's a carer), so I thought I'd do a few hours today.

I'm behind on my regular work (only a bit), plus i've got a whiteboard in my office with a list of extras and bits and bobs, so I've ticked a few off today.

Had three days off last week (lovely long weekend in Bath) and a complete chill day yesterday, boat trip round the Jurassic coast, followed by a nice lunch out, drinks, taxis and a chilled afternoon.

Not terrible  ;D

May I say, I have seen some of your patio and driveway cleaning work in the 'General Section'.
Very nice work indeed.

I used to work most bank holidays when I was in the UK. I was in Kent, but I never used to start before 10:30 and never had a problem or got sent away.

Here in Ireland I tried the same when I started up here. It very quickly became obvious that it's not the done thing here without prior arrangement! I may do the odd one now and again, usually gutter cleans rather than windows, but I have come to appreciate having a bit of time off!

What a stupid comment to make!
So all the workers who happen to work on bank holidays are desperate.  What about all the many petrol stations open on a bank holiday, are they desperate to make money and the staff are desperate for their pay?    Yet if they weren't open, all the non desperate people who are travelling would be cursing. Never mind if all the places they wanted to visit were closed, because they didnt need to be open cause they arent desperate!
😂
😂

If normally he works from that time in the morning, he could be forgiven as its just another working day for him.  However a  later start would have been more suitable, taking into account it is a day off for many others

As I said Nathan I never work bank holiday, only reason I gave it ago yesterday is because I'm away next week and I'm already behind. If I wasn't going away there is no way I would have worked it.

Am I desperate for money...nope

Desperate to get some work done, yes perhaps, I don't like the fact I have to have a day off when I really didn't want one..
.. but I'll make sure I remember how desperate I am when I'm sat by the pool next week in Spain with a few beers. I'm sure I'll feel like a right loser  ;)

Petrol stations being open are important. You washing somebodies windows on a bank holiday because you are desperate for money isn’t important. Not to anybody but you anyway.

Funny how all the usual braggers are the ones having to miss out on a day off because they need to work.

Why are petrol stations ok to be open, just because you cant plan ahead and get petrol the day before they close (if they were to close)
 ;D ;D :o

Dude, i worked a handful of hours due to having several days off due to family illness, so NO buddy, its not a normal routine and if you recall from numerous  other threads, its the usual braggers who dont work every day of the week like some, so who actually cares if ones want to work a bank holiday or not, especially when they have various days off in a month. ;D ;D

So i stand by my comment saying its foolish to call workers on bank holidays desperate.
Ps,  thought you might want to know, im only working half day today as well 👍

I don't see why more of you lot dont work on Bank Holidays and why it's such a taboo with you guys.  I take holidays when i want to take holidays.  Not because im told i have to because every other poor sod is going to take it off aswell and that we "shouldn't" be out working on such a day.

Nonsense.  All customers were notified day before.  2 Customers asked to be done on a different day on this occasion.  No problem.  Did just short of £500 on Monday on domestics.  Also picked up 3 new customers in areas where usually i don't see anyone about but everyone and their nan was at home so signed up some easy walk ups.  Nobody complained, even got offered drinks off customers who usually dont make the effort with us.

Benefit of working on Bank Holiday Monday?  Well i'm taking this friday off now because all our work will be done for the month.  Oh then im off for 9 days straight, as we have worked like stink in August  ;D ;D ;D ;D

I think working bank holidays or weekends Or even school holidays for that matter is just not a great experience for the window cleaner or the customer.

As I experienced, people are generally in bed first thing, which makes you feel awkward and the customer probably do not appreciate being woke up.

Then you have the issue of lots of people being in which means lots of cars in the way and I didn't know about you but I prefer people being out.

Then there's the kids either in the gardens or just as bad following you round the windows and pulling faces etc inside, questioning you and generally getting in the way.

Walking into a back garden full of people or kids, swimming pools etc, can't move for stuff and feeling peoples eyes burning into you.

I like to people to be out, it's faster and less stressful, it I never saw or spoke to a customer I would be in heaven.

I don't generally work bank holidays but I would if it suited me on occasion. Why make a rule where one isn't necessary?

E.g. last year an external commercial custy asked if I could do a full internal with glass partitions and glass lift shaft on a Saturday when they had a skeleton staff in. I said no but I could do it for the same price on the Bank holiday Monday the week after (as I knew my daughter was around and wanted paid work.) They gave me the codes to get in and let me get on with it.

Worked out well for me as it was £420 for the job which we did in 6 hours. Gave her £120 which she was happy with.

It's a game of three halves!

I don't generally work bank holidays but I would if it suited me on occasion. Why make a rule where one isn't necessary?

E.g. last year an external commercial custy asked if I could do a full internal with glass partitions and glass lift shaft on a Saturday when they had a skeleton staff in. I said no but I could do it for the same price on the Bank holiday Monday the week after (as I knew my daughter was around and wanted paid work.) They gave me the codes to get in and let me get on with it.

im on about regular domestic houses...not commercial.....thats different.....ive worked on good friday before now on commercial jobs

Yeh 10am would have been a better time to start.

However it seems a bit pointless starting at that time as you've wasted half the day so best policy is to just to not work them I think.

why is it a waste starting at 10am?i often start at 930am-10am........and work til around 3pm-4pm...thats a full day for me these days... ;D

Because if I wake at 7 I'm just going to be day there till 10 twiddling my thumbs

I'd rather be out at 8 or so and home for 2 then time to do something else with the day.

If I'm not rolling in whilst 4 PM by the time I've got van and custs sorted and had something to eat etc it's too late to do anything.

I never start later than 9 if I'm not out by 9 I'm not going out

seems a strange attitude to have......each to their own..... ;D

seems logical to me  ;D

Get out
Get done
Get home

gas man called early this morning to service my boiler  then i went for my haircut(barbers are never busy at 915am on wednesdays)......

worked 10am-330pm,30 mins for lunch.........still hit my target for the day despite it raining virtually the whole time i was out... ::)roll ;D

I would have done the haircut after work instead.

Couldn't go do something like that and then start work it's just all wrong!

Get work out of the way then free to do what you want.

I work 8:30 - 2:30 generally
