Any Citroen Berlingo Owners?
« on: December 11, 2006, 01:08:23 am »
In 2007 I'm gonna buy a 2001 Citroen Berlingo, I was wondering if anyone has one, and what their experiences are. I drove one a while back, and was quite impressed, and would in my case be the best thing I can get for my money.

Kind regards.

I've never used one for WFP but I did use one for a while several years ago.  It seemed fine - though I had been used to a Ford Escort at the time.

Sounds great! How about mileage and insurance? Or maintenance cost. Any problems with it? :)

How about rust? And how does the engine run? any problems in that regard?

I didn't have it long enough to assess that stuff as I had it on hire for a couple of months.  It was a nice drive for a diesel van though.

I have a 51 plate one, good little van.
Spent a few £££'s on it last few weeks like £265 for an exhaust, as they do not make repair pipes for it so had to buy the pipe with the cat in and new rear box!!!!

Gear box leak, replace a few seals and refill with gear box oil £103

Apart from that in the 6 months i have had it been mint, starts first time every time and drives well. Although i would say its a little on the small side on the inside, and i would have prefered a sliding door but hey ho only cost me £2k so got a bargain!!

As with buying any vehicle just look for history and how its been looked after

No rust on mine has a few scrapes but it looks like it is zinc coated under paint

Oooooo that is shiny!!

Got a P reg for back up. 160,000 on the clock, no rust, original clutch and exhaust. The only grumble is the interia trim. Most of the plastic nobs etc fell off simply by looking at them.

Many thanks for the experiences, about 1,5 year ago I drove one, and it was a really nice van, pretty good size (for me, don't need anything bigger) and good looks, great drive ability. I got a good vehicle checklist when I'm gonna look for one.

Hi,

I've got an 06 one. Its been brilliant and drives really well, just like a car and I prefer it to the C3 I have as well. No problems to report but then it was a brand new one.

Might be worthwhile looking out for the 800 model as its a better payload weight if you want to carry heavy stuff. The 1.9 engine is good and seems to pull well for a modest power plant however I wish I went for the 2.0 one as fuel consumption so I'm told is better - I get arount 35mpg on my 1.9 but I do all stop start local stuff.

Would I buy another ? Yes as it looks like its going to be a good van for what I need. Also look at the Peugeot Partner - same van under a different badge.

The problem with the 2.0Hdi Turbo is that you are inclined to drive it harder and it then will use more fuel that the ordinary 1.9 (which is the old Peugeot faithful). It's horses for courses.

When I worked for a Citroen Garage we had a Berlingo parts delivery van which was totally abused. The only thing that when wrong in 90k was a clutch cable needed replacement.
Always tried to use this van as a demonstrator as it drove beautifully and didn't have a squeek or rattle. Customer were more impressed than the new demonstrator we had.

Good van. The only down side is that the Berlingo never came out with unglazed rear doors (part of the assembly process was to weld the body together with the door in place and the welders needed access through the window cavities. But then the back windows are bonded in the same as the front windscreen for better security.

Would always recommend timing belts be changed by a Brand dealer as they use special tools to get the timing dead accurate which is important on the 1.9. Incorrect timing can cause premature piston failure.

I have the car version. Its got sliding doors both sides but they don open wide. It has a tailgate thats handy for standing under when it rains. But if its heavy the water drips into the boot. Because its high ceilinged the rack is a bit higher and with the tailgate you need an over the cab extension rack so that the ladders fit forward. I got a Rhino rack- reasuringly expensive. The ladders go on top so its quite a stretch for anyone less than 5-10". Because its front wheel drive car and van have a poor turning circle. Most of the kit goes in the boot and leaves me with the passenger seats fairly clear./ Even with the seats folded down you cannot get anything long in it. I keep my poles up inside the roof on perspex sheets.

Hi Jeff,
The Multispace is a great vehicle although a little rear space is lost because of the fold up rear seats.
Anyone considering a Multispace must also bear in mind that it has a smaller payload than the 600kg on the van (450kg is the figure but I stand to be corrected). It's certainly less than 600kg.

Bought a 2001 at auction (Ex Scottish Water)
got it for £1300
1.8 D     68 000miles F/S/H and fresh respray as it had to go through auction
Van and engine was in absolutely mint condition
and probably the best buy ive ever made
alas since then ive dented the side and had a few knocks but its
now at 122 000 miles and still drives like a dream

only prob is once the roof rack is on    ladder clamps can be a bit nippy ...... :P

How easy is it to get the ladders on and off the roof rack? Because it is higher then a normal car.

We are on our second Berlingo, and have no complaints at all, I am 5' 4" and can get ladders on and off no problem, although a bit of a stretch, sometimes :D

We use 'luggage straps', easy to take off and tie on....especially if your a short ass!!
