you are wrong mate, the shortest day of the year is the 21st!

well close enough but dont worry were all going to be dead a few days later  ;)

According to the chart Dave is right - the whole day shortens to the shortest on the 21st/22nd because although the sunset starts later from the fifteenth, the sunrise is still getting later at a faster rate thus shortening the day.

In noticeable terms though the daylight hours between the 15th to 30th December are only a few minutes different in length.
It's a game of three halves!

Ben, read my two paragraphs closely. Look at the sunrise/sunset times very closely in Dave's chart and I am confident you will understand.
