Personally I have a couple of Lavors which have never been any grief - its the components around them that fail, flows switches in particular  ;D

That's fine but its just in a big box, I have the Lavor boiler in an Exchange box - again a very big box. I now have just a simple boiler, small frame, minimal plumbing with a remote tank which is all bolted to my trailer. If you have the room then it would be fine for sensible money - there are second hand machines. Where are you ?

I've been mulling over to build a trailer/van mount but to be honest I do like the idea of a hot box being portable. Same as the washer I use so can use them static or portible dependant on the job in hand.

What do you think?

I have a hot 21 ltr trailer and portable hot 15 ltr machine. Also about 5 other washers for gutters and washing the bike etc. I have about 65 m of hose on the trailer so I can get most things. 95 on the jetter

What jobs do you find work best using hot/steam as I've never used a hot box before so any advice would be much appreciated

Any job that involves paint removal and degreasing mostly. Anything else would be done with cold with the help of the odd chemicals

Thats true - I never tend to use the PW on gum because there never seems to be any water on the sites. I usually use the Osprey on gum

I'm looking at getting into masonry cleaning using low pressure steam cleaning which doesn’t damage the substrate that high pressure cold jetting would do.

What do you think of this as I know it’s just a boiler on a cart attached to a lower psi & flow rate pump than I currently use but does look the dogs nuts.

I got myself a lavor valcano hotbox (so say hardly used) bargain from fleebay in the end for £450 just so to have a play. Might even strip it down and adapt it to make a van/trailer mount system so to take up less space and save carting it about. I went for that one as it's a 21ltr min boiler which at the mo seems more than capable for my needs.

If/when I win the lotto I still might go down the thermotech route  ;D

the Thermotech is just an ordinary hotbox but because the flow of water from the attached electric pump is such a low litre output then it heats up extremely hot.
better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove any doubt

You could build one for a lot less money....the only problem with that tho is most architects specifie  Doff or ThermaTech.
All the fixtures and fitting need to be capable of withstanding 150c. Most off the "shelf hot boxes" only get to about 90c.  When you start making steam strange things happen to hoses ,fitting, trigger assemblies!

It really depends what you want the heat for ...if you are washing wagons, diggers the Thermatech is not really the right tool.

It seems to me architects have been brain washed (maybe paid off) why doff & thermatec are the only spec contrators should be using for low psi wet steam cleaning. It also seems funny that doff & now thermatec concepts came from (copied from) a well know german company which the pumps supplied with their systems come from them anyway.

To pay out 6 grand seems bonkers to me and those two are onto a winner for sure.

Chris can you do me a favour when you have a chance look at the plate on the boiler and see what max lpm flow rate, max bar (psi) and make it is as I would be interested to find out what it is. ;)

Boiler will be standard Lavor 21 . Pumps an interpump. Exchange engineering will build you a boiler..if you require a one off.
If you are after cheap Tensid do a  a similar performance machine ...but with the ThermaTec you get Jaime on the phone when ever you need him. That is priceless!
The "new Stonehealth" are a bunch of tossers. Best of luck dealing with them. ;D
