Hozelock fittings and airlocks
« on: March 18, 2019, 08:56:25 pm »

I use hozelock fittings on the pipework from my tank to the pump as per the pic and seem to be suffering with airlocks and leaks.

What do you guys use that might improve my setup?

None-return valve after tank outlet, about a fiver and will cure your issue.

Heat the hose up in hot water and slip this baby into it, maybe use a tiny bit of washing up liquid as lube if needed. Had one in for years and suffer zero air ingress issues- always got air in system before.

I use the 'official shurflo' connectors either side of the pump - no hozelock fittings until the reel

For your pump to be most efficient it needs to pump water only once primed, not a mixture of water and air.

Hozelock fittings are usually fine on the delivery side of the pump.
However, the problem with hozelock fittings on the supply side of the pump is that they are designed to have water pumped through them, not drawn (sucked) through them. When drawing water through them it is highly likely that you will draw air past the ‘o’ rings as well as they are designed to stop water escaping under pressure not air ingress under negative pressure.

For this reason the supply side of your pump needs to be completely airtight. This can best be achieved with the hose clamped to the correct Sureflo adapter as another poster has mentioned.
We have a choice! We can do one or the other, the opposite, both, or neither depending on which way the wind is blowing.

Yes all from Gardiner’s. From pump outlet I use a ‘stem to barb’ & switch to clear 1/2” hose so as to be able to hoselock type fitting (Gardiner’s orange ones) to reel inlet brass elbow.

Thanks Simon

I see you're in a nice part of England Simon, in Somerset.
How do you go on with salty sea windows?

Never noticed a problem but then I've never known any different. I try and stay away from the seafront, not because of the salt & sand so much, but because they're mostly Victorian buildings with sashes. It's often windy on the seafront too.

I try and stay away from the Mersey too.
Not salt that's the problem it's mud and sludge 😱
