If you had a high end portable with 500 psi 2xHi power vacs would this offer much advantage or not, or is it best to hold out for a real TM?

with this set up you would getting higher temp and 1400 psi i think ....

yes you are right and you can get 1400psi at gun if you need to do steamcleaning tile cleaning car valeting ect but will go as low as 40 psi for seats ect it is one of are spare vans since i have owned it have spent loads on it inside and out
