Hi  everyone.

My ro setup is at my parents.

My dad got a letter today saying that smart metres are being fitted in his road within 3 months.

But water metres  won't be activated for 2 years.

Surely I will stick out like a sore thumb and be spotted straight away?

I use 250litres a day maximum sometimes less.

What would my water bill be based on 1000 litres a week?

Looked up Thames waters figures this is domestic rates.

Waltham Forest 71.22     51.24  (sewage).

What would you do?
Wait and see or contact water board? Is there a way of separating my parents water usage from my works?
Ie. Water metre in my parents garage.

Those of you making pure water at home for work do you just get charged domestic water rates for your work water?

I have no idea as I'm not on a meter yet but I suspect all housholds will be put on a smart meter sooner rather than later if they want one or not. What is driving this is plain old greed and nothing else as will make the wealthy shareholders richer and simply means users getting screwed over yet again as we will be paying for them indirectly by price increases being sneaked in

Hi lee I'm with southern water,they fitted a water metre on my house approx two years ago,my water  bill almost doubled,I fitted a sub metre  before my garage tap that I use for filling my van mounted system
After fitting the sub metre I phoned them  and told them I'm a window cleaner and that I had fitted a sub metre,they asked me each time I get a bill from them to phone them with sub metre readings,since doing that I normall get about £150 knocked off my water bill every six months
I use approx 1500 litres of pure a week

I have not had any issues by telling them I'm a window cleaner they have not visited my house either,
I didn't mention about ro system,as waste water will be an issue if putting it down a drain,my waste water goes into my pond.

Just fit a metre before your ro system and offset the entire water consumption as business expense. There you go, free water!

In my last house we weren't metered. The water board had a meter for the close and knew they were losing water, up to three cubic metres a day. They never twigged where, they used to walk the road with a stethoscope looking for the leak.

£50 a month for me(DI only) although it would be over double that if i used an RO.(thats purifying my water and my household usage)

Fit a sub-meter to record your usage and get a discount for sewerage.
Tell them you're a window cleaner and you transport the water away from the premises and it doesn't go down the drain therefore no waste water removal charge.
Don't forget to pay your parents for the water you use

Just because its a claimable expense doesn't mean it free. Every expense has to be paid for, it just that it isn't taxed.

Your water costs would go up on an r/o, but your resin costs will drop.

I'm guessing my work water bill would be £500 a year.

My parents currently pay £450 a year, they are not on a water metre, when the are I'm guessing there bill would be less;  say £350 a year as  2 people living in house.

So combined bill £1000 a year tops;  £20 a week.

Can i fit sub metre anywhere along the the outside supply?

My setup is water tap under parents kitchen window, outside in garden.
Then hose to garage 15 feet away through hole in wall. Then into ro system.

Can I fit sub metre in garage? Or will it have to be on tap outside kitchen window?

The way I understand it is that inland you have two types of drains, sew or foul and surface water. Sewage is all water from  the toilet, bath, washing machine etc. Surface water will be all rainwater. Your waste r/o water should go down the surface water drain to qualify for a rebate.

On the coast both drains are the same as they are emptied into the great sewage works at low tide.

Can anyone explain the equation for working out water cost?

Figures: Waltham Forest 71.22 --51.24 (sewage).
(is that cubic metre/1000 litres).

So 71.22p + 51.24p = £122.46 then multiply that figure by 3 because RO- system produced 2 thirds waste water. (?)

£3.67 per 1000 litres?

Or am I confused.com

Hi lee I got mine from bellflow systems on line,think it was approx £30 ish,there are different models can't remember which one I have ,but call them they will help.
Mine is fitted before an outside tap,so what your going to do is fine
The only issue is the waste  water ,as if it's going  down the drain that is chargeable as waste water/ sewerage,as I said mine goes in my pond so not a prob for me,having said that southern water never asked any questions,I just told them I was a window cleaner and wanted to fill my tank
I don't see how they can backdate you as they have no idea how much water you have used.
Regarding cost of water used when I started on a meter water approx £1 cubic meter ,water and waste as in household approx £3 a cubic meter  so a good saving.

I have a water meter fitted and use almost the same amount as you.
I would say your cost calculation is just about right.
My monthly bill, total is £66 thats home and business. We have 2 adults and a little boy ( who dosent flush the loo as much as he should!) But showers a plenty.
I have a sub meter, from ebay on the supply hose just after it enters the garage.
I calculate my cost per cubic meter and deduct 2/3 rds as an expense.

Not that bad if it is, mine is £77 per month and I'm not on a meter (Wessex Water)

We only wash at Christmas whether we need it or not.

Fuel going up water going up food etc,just do another couple of houses a week you'll be more than covering any lncreases short term.

Just to clarify the ⅔ waste you claim for is not in producing the pure water.

I mean water authorities give you a rebate as every cubic metre of water you use, they charge you a percentage for sewage.

So you give them reading off your sub metre and they reimburse you sewage costs as long as your not sending waste water down the drain

I got worried that maybe the ladders would have to come out occasionally.

Think the main problem was I was unhappy with earnings so looking for away to boost my income.

I raised my prices last September some  by quite a bit!

Alot happier now with my business;  not looking to offer any add ons just yet.
