Not specialising in this field of cleaning, to you guys out there doing oven cleans....just how many people have their ovens cleaned these days?? I was just thinking of your 10000 leaflets and the distribution....My home town has about 40000 people.....and i wouldn't think that many of them would have their ovens cleaned.

Hopefully one of you guys can come up with a figure. Especially as a lot of these posts these days talk about oven cleaning and their franchises etc

you know tim i was thinking the same earlier, ive been in the cleaning industry for 18 years or so and ive never met anyone whos done oven cleaning or had there oven cleaned by someone else, its probably a lucritive buisness that ive not known about, or maybe i aint not posh enough (dont they clean themselves thesedays?) i,m not belittling the job ,but it would be interesting for someone to tell us if you can earn a good living from it.

I sent out 10,000 leaflets with my local paper and got ZERO response (I'm in the mattress cleaning business). The leaflets were professionally designed and looked impressive but still failed to attract any business. (Average uptake on this type of distribution is supposed to be 0.3% - 0.8%)
My local paper is full of Christmas catalogues etc at the moment so I feel that most small, single sheet flyer would either get overlooked or be consigned to the bin with all the other junk mail. Maybe wait until after the January sales leaflets have finished.
I hope that you prove me wrong and this method of marketing works for you.

Cant talk about oven cleaning in particular, however the average conversion rate on leaflets is usually a lot less 0.05 to 0.25 which doesnt even make the bottom figure of AllergEase post, dependant on product, area, content and price.

At the moment we are in the middle of a national junk mail rebellion (as survey reports proclaimed yesterday) which may also affect these figures even further.

Whatever industry, a 1% conversion rate is highly ambitious, unless your giving something away (which could be an idea)  ;)

Just another thought:
I cant imagine any housewife waiting 7.5 weeks to have their oven cleaned once they had made the decision.

there's only 1 person in my town doing ovencleans as far as i know.....by coincidence he did one of my wife's friends ovens (which she was well pleased with and parted with £45 for 1 and half hrs work)....he told her he was inundated with requests for this service but because he does mainly repairs etc. he turns down most of the work......he told her he was looking for someone to go in with, so i will be giving him a call and will let you know what he has to say...............TO ANYONE THINKING OF BUYING A FRANCHISE SUCH AS OVENCLEAN...DO'NT....there are much cheaper roads to go down ;) ;)

Surely in this day and age, these new self cleaning ovens probably are more likely to break before they need a proper clean!!

We do live in a throw away society and even appliances are built to only last 5 years or so before they get replaced!!

I asked at our office the sales manager of our larger sister company, which sells these appliances to the new build industry and to the public.....He's never been asked if we know of any company that cleans ovens.

I would have thought the "older" generation would more likely be the people to target.

Kind Regards

what an eye opener...really did'nt think this would get such a  negetive feedback considering the amount of companies little and large who are making an extremely good living providing this service,,,,,,,,

That’s because the people who are answering this topic so far don’t actually know anything on the subject by their own admission, what you really need is somebody who is doing it.

However what you asked for was an opinion on your sums, which you got respectfully.

Dustdees.
I thought you got a good response with your own leaflet drop.

I have found specialised jobs such as oven cleaning or even what I do which is Pressure Washing, the reponse from leaflets is pretty poor. Back in the summer I sent out 10,000 leaflets and I got around 12 responses. 4 of those were complete timewasters who wanted only a quote over the phone.  Try explaining to some people its difficult to give a quote without having a look at the job!

2 wanted the work done but weren't prepared to pay and I got the remaining 6.

Of those 6 I got more additional work as neighbours/friends not wishing to be outdone by the "Jones's" wanted their drives done. I have found the only true way of going forward with something like this is to have 1 to 1 contact with potential clients.

I wish you luck but try offering something else as well as oven cleaning or perhaps look at others that use ovens such as restaurants, cafes, bakers etc etc

in the cleaning game u can build up a very nice bizz domestic side  off  leaflets  but u can never stop doing leaflets  just plug away at them u get u rewards

I have never known anyone to do oven cleaning and have never had our oven cleaned by anyone else - mind you I am not involved in the domestic side of the business at all.

But.........just as a sounding board I asked my wife "If you had a leaflet come through the door about oven cleaning, would you be interested and what would you consider a fair price?"

She said she wouldn't be interested at all and SHE is the one person I know who WOULD pay someone to do something so that she didn't have to do it herself!

Anyway, hasn't anyone heard of drip trays or tin foil?

I think it is assumed that folk are doing well because of the high level of marketing we are seeing from the franchise companies looking for franchiees. I beleive in a large city you may do ok but small city or rural area you would suffer.
Other than the franchisor and say rentokill who do a lot of commercial work who are these people making big money.

CLEANING CO is spot on in both threads in a neich market such as this you have to repeat drop and I would say door knock to get results.

For our bin cleaning we bin strip (leaflet on bin) then leaflet drop then door knock till you have talked to everyone in the street in this way folks who are not in may get 4 to 6 leaflets.

Clifford i know you are excited about new venture but just how many people are making real cash from this area of cleaning, do not kid yourself their are other markets out their.

To answer your question no you figures do not add up.

Sorry about spelling
Cheers

Is there really any safer method than surveying your potential clients, and extrapolating figures from the survey into a Business Plan? If the hunch is so strong, see if it stands up to the test.

Isn't anything else just pi**ing in the wind: it may succeed, but then again...

all i can say is i have spoken to ian robertson from OVENMASTER in shropshire (not a franchise).........he is doing around 20-25 cleans per week (his choice)....at an average of £45 per job+ add ons such as filters replacement bulbs ect:
most importantly he is not frighened in giving me names a no.s of all the people he has helped start this business i have already spoken to someone in glasgow who is more than happy and very busy........i will certainly be foning most of these people before i part with any cash and decided whether this business is for me.....as i've said before i've been round the houses a few times running my own business and any decision i make will not be taken lightly.................as for the 3% quoted in this thread, it was'nt me that conjoured up this figure, i was as surprised and sceptical as most other people and did'nt beleive it for a minute.....like everone else if this figure was correct i would booking my world cruise for next year and buying the villa in spain that i've always wanted ;D..............so to round off there are many ways to promote your business, so lets here some positive suggestions other than the ones been talked about already.............good luck everone in what ever secter of the business you are in.............cheers........... ;)
