Has anyone taken on an apprentice ?
« on: September 30, 2016, 02:34:27 pm »
Hi,

Just wondered if anyone has taken on an apprentice and if so what steps did you take ?

Did you receive a grant ?

Thank you

I believe if it's done through the job center you do get some kind of grant, good luck you'll need it from there. I'd pay more money get some one that knows what there doing and chuck him a pole.

Once, but he was naff, and that was even when he bothered to turn up on time.

On his last day at work - on the way to our first job - he started crying.  I was like "What's wrong with you?"  He said "I'm sad because my grandad died!"  Now I'm not heartless and I had been giving him a tough time about his time-keeping, so I said, "Oh why didn't you say?  Look, I'll take you home now.  When did your grandad die?"

And he said "Last year; it's the anniversary!"

I thought to myself, you're not coming back to work with me you flipping wet blanket.

For a start your taking on an employee so you have two choices get somebody with experience and pay them a full wage
or take on somebody train them up for a week or two and up their wage when the targets are hit.
By all means have a word with the local job centre to see if you can get an employee grant but I wouldn't use the word
apprentice unless they want to use it for grant purposes.

NWH,

I already directly employ 12 people and sub-contract quite a lot of work out, and was looking to take on a young lad to train up, have no hesitation in spending some time choosing someone as i believe they would add to my team.

Also i think it would be good to help to teach someone all the aspects i know about window cleaning in the hope they will become a valuable team member.

Was just seeing what people's experiences are in this matter.

Probably made the grandad bit up. I'm almost certain you bored him to tears.

If u looking at the long term then it's a good idea, start them off young an train them yaself,
I done this and had a lad from wen he was 15 - 25, by the time he was 21 I had him in his own van and he was my highest earner on paye, but was worth the extra money an insurance.

I have jobs adverts out and on the phone everyone has done it 10 years and there the best thing since sliced bread, give them an interview and put a set of swag in there hands an say run them windows off in front of me an lets see how good u r ...... Well that's wen all the fun starts.

NWH seems to be questioning the op's intentions. Perhaps he thinks busby should know about apprenticeships because he employs people already. Perhaps he thinks busby is a fibber.

Either way it seems like a daft thing to question.

Come on Soupy the guy has employed 12 people and now comes on looking to know about apprenticeships in window
cleaning followed by telling us he's looking for a Charlie Bucket to train up and take over the empire, its lucky Jesus is coming and everybody is in a less sinful mood or he would have took a real battering for that one. lol.
Its a windup.

The thing is I employ 16 people and have no idea about apprenticeships. I was genuinely interested to see if anyone had anything relevant to say.

Honestly.

That's because there's no such thing as an apprenticeship in window cleaning, you take a young lad on you. pay him a bit less
while he's learning the ropes. pay a bit more when he knows the job and then the full amount when he's up to speed.
Even if your business involves abseiling or using Cherry pickers your not talking years of training.

I beg to differ.

The government can call it what its wants lol, and don't get me wrong I'm sure there will be cleaning jobs out there where
specialised training will be needed, but that reminds me of the firm I used to work for that by law had to pay for some guy to
come into the factory once a year to show us all how to lift a box of the ground without pulling our backs out, or manual handling
certified as they called it. lol,

Ha, yeah I agree. Oil workers need to do drops awareness training. Basically, if you carry something incorrectly you might drop it. Training done.

Realistically you could teach most people most of the job in less than 12 months. You'd need most of the year to cover all types of weather.
